Break-in period and fluids for ZL1?
Hello All,
Although I am not new to vehicles in general, I am new to the ZL1. It's been a whole 2 months since I got my 2023 ZL1 On that note, I was able to find a main post that talks about fluids and break ins. From the info gather I will do unless the consensus says differently: Engine oil: At 500 miles then again at 1,500 miles. Diff: At 500 miles then again at 1,500 miles M6 Trans : 1,500 miles The guide that I have attached here states to do it at 500 miles but does not go further than that. The owner's manual says not to rev engine past 4k RPM's before 1,500 miles on the odometer, which tells me engine is still breaking. So at 1,500 miles, another oil change is due. Question is: If engine is still breaking in AT 500 miles, am I going to put the full synthetic oil that GM sells back in at 500 miles?? Which normally would not be advisable when an engine is breaking in. Historically, factory engines have "break-in" lube/oil then you drain it when the break-in period is done with. But, at 500 miles, seems "break-in isn't done with yet? |

You're going to hear people on here say different but what the track prep guide says is the same that the sticky says at the top of this forum.
After the 1500 mile oil change, change it every 5k miles or once every year (if you're one of those that drives the car less than 5k miles a year). The owners manual tells you every 7500 miles but 5k is better for a high performance engine. And yes, you're going to put the recommended 0w40 oil back in the engine at the 500 mile oil change and beyond. Don't buy oil or filters from the dealership. You can find it cheaper elsewhere. |

Honestly, I was just going to go to the dealer and buy the first change there( oil and filter). But, cheaper to find it elsewhere, Indeed. I just have to find a good source for this specific oil type. For my other daily vehicles, I just go to Amazon but wasn't so lucky finding this specific oil there, so I'll have to expand my search. |

Usually you can find a good autozone deal for oil plus the correct pf64 oil filter that you are supposed to use. |

If you aren't going to track the car, track prep is not needed.
The difference between tracking a car...balls to the wall lap after lap...and street driving, is an order of magnitude. |

500/1500 fluid need to be done and you do need to season/burnish the brakes. Which are the first 2 sections of the guide. 3 4 and 5 are for the road course. 6 is useful to understand certain controls the car has, if you don't already know how to use those items. |

I was shopping around and of course I went to Amazon. I found the 0W40 SUPERCAR Dexos. I just don't know based on the Amazon photo if it's Dexos 2 or Dexos R. It's a very blurry photo. See photo. Also, it's labeled as ESP. On another chat found, it stated that Mobil themselves stated that ESP is the same exact oil as Dexos2. If you search amazon for oil and filter provided that the oil in photo is the same, you'll actually save about $25 over Speedway Motors. |

Break in threads should be summarily deleted and the OP banned.

My plan was to do my oil/filter ar 500, then oil/filter and rear diff at 1,500. Beyond that, I don't know what "mileage schedule" I should use going forward for them???. Not a daily driver and doesn't get driven in cold/wet/snow conditions. Also is winterized from about Halloween to end of April/beginning of May each year. Any inputs would be helpful. Thanks!

I'd wait a little longer on the diff fluid. My 22 wasn't overly dirty at 500 miles and I'm planning on changing the 23 at 1000. I definitely will change the oil and filter at 500 and then follow the oil life to about 25% for future changes.
