4.10 Gears?

Hey guys. So I just had a cam installed and it likes to buck like a bronco under 1500rpm's. I've read that by upping your gear ratio it will help offset that by getting you through the RPM's quicker. I have a 2010 SS LS3. I've done some research and cant really find a definitive answer on what brand I should go with. Obviously for 3.91's you should go with GM. But there doesn't seem to be a quite so obvious choice for the 4.10's.

Also, I see where you can buy just the 4.10 gears or the installation package that adds another $250 to the price. Do you need to buy the installation package if you are taking it to a shop or is that for people who are trying a DIY?

Thanks in advance for all the help!

I run Motive. Some whine at 45-55 but nothing that big deal to me. They arent set up perfect either so they could be a touch quieter.

Richmond sells a 4.11.

Ask your installer about the install kit. Some want it, some have their own parts.

Why would you want 4.10's when the GM 3.91's are so readily available and inexpensive?

I figure in my case it will help a little extra, the bucking is quite annoying. The sooner and easier I get passed that rpm range the better. 4.10's will do it quicker. Not to mention, my cam lost a noticeable amount on low end torque, I would assume the 4.10's would also give me some of that butt dyno feeling back of a strong low end pull haha.

3.91 is what the SS should have came with. My G8 GXP came 3.70 with a shorter tire than the SS and it was near perfect fo the stock LS3. Cam the LS3 and it would benefit from a steeper gear.
BFASTNOTLAST is looking to go from 4.10 to 4.33 even.
I love my Motive 4.10s, goes great with my daily driver th400 swapped ride.

You want all the gear you can get in a M6 5th gen. Motive gears tend to be more quiet and you might consider getting them rem polished, as Bo said the 4.10 is the stronger pattern. If I could get 4.56 for my 1LE they would already be in it. Install kit is needed but some shops have shims left over and you can get by with a half kit.

I went with 3.91 in my swap. It bucks a little from 1500-2000k, but its workable without issue. I debated on 4.10 gears, but ultimately got away from them due to the potential of whine and with 4.10 those teeth are so small.

I never had 'bucking' issues with my cammed cars. You eventually figure out how to drive them (which is the goal). I know there was a lot of discussion about irrelevance when folks were wanting to swap the 3.45's for 3.73 or 3.70.
Just curious why the same doesnt apply for 3.91 to 4.10?
I'm no math wiz....but I would see it as not worth the extra money for a few more teeth.

Alas you have discovered the "dirty" little secret 'bout bigger cams...for motor heads it's a "who gives a rats patooty" however for the DD'rs ...hmmmm..not so much...

I freakin luv the fact I can practically drive over the mountain in my backyard in 4th! All the way...and no luggin....now when I DO put in some steeper gears I will be hard pressed between the 3.91 and 4.10's...and when I do it since my mileage is so high I will use a full install kit for the new bearings...AND a LPW cover!

Now the steeper gears as said above won't fix the below 1500k...just covers it up nice since you HAVE to leave from a stop with higher rpm's....you have all summer to get used to it! peace out!....

BTW - side benefit is since you will be shiftin gears more your gear bangin skillz "should"improve too!

Agree with this. The car isn't my DD, so the occasional bucking doesn't really concern me. My builder said the BTR S4 is going to cause that, and the ported heads were going to exaggerate that a little further. Just the nature of the beast, I gotta just adapt my driving.

I got the LPW rear cover when I had the gears swapped.

Its not that you leave at a higher rpm its more so your not in the lower rpm as long. Also less load against the engine helps with it too.
