Winter Tires

I just picked up a set of factory 2015 SS/RS wheels, see below, as my winter set for my 1LE. I am looking for winter tires to put on them and am struggling to decide what size to use. (Please no haters for driving it through the winter) Has anyone gotten a set/used them in a winter yet that could give me some insight?

Thanks

I would suggest 245/45R20 for winter use. The narrower tire will cut the snow better. This size will work on the front and rear wheels.

Yes Rudy is right going for the 245 45 20 will preform better and give you more tire choices.

I run mine all year long on OEM rims, staggered set with the nitto nt90w. Great tire on snow and ice...considerably less than blizzaks...yes it's a new tire and doesn't have the track record...but I already have mine waiting. Driven on sheet ice at -12 and over 4" of snow, slush combos so far

Tire Rack doesn't carry nitto so looking around and price shopping can get a you a screaming deal...I got one

I drive my 2013 2LT/RS all year, I dropped to 17? wheels and run Blizzaks...the name of my car changes to TANK in the winter, because it handles everything...I have passed 4x4s on the side of the road... :-)

FYI these tires need time to settle in. The amount of cuts (cypping ?) make these tires dance. It was the most bizarre feeling getting these to settle in. Drove my SS last winter with these, they danced on dry roads but where amazing in snow, ice and sub zero temps. They never felt cold and hard.

White1LE, I've been using the Blizzak setup, I've had mine since Dec. '11 using the 275/40/20 Blizzak DMV1's mounted on 4 20x9 Camaro rims w/TPMS sensors. I know this setup is a pretty wide/square setup but it has worked really well and the treadwear was amazingly even over the past several seasons with rotations front to back. the DMs are directional treadpattern, has rotation direction on sidewall.

I've driven thru some really deep snow 7-9 inches and having the wider tread track kept me from sinking like a slimmer tire might. Getting the feel for the road driving in the snow with this type of setup is much different than the summer tread. The Blizzaks really grip alot at full tread depth on acceleration, the ride is a little squishy as the tread is real soft.

Its funny to see how much spray and salt dust the snowtires make, almost Tornadic, wait till you see it in the rearviews when you get on it, lol. They're a little noisy on dry clear roads but sound mean in a good way. Braking and turning is better in the snow/ice if you letup on gas pedal and avoid too much braking while turning so the tread can bite into the snow. I usually mountup when the Fall temps start dropping into the 40's then off by Apr 1. have a good winter.

Ive been debating the same thing-the NItto NT90W's...or going a less expensive route and getting the General AS03's. They are all weather, but everyoen I have talked with has had NO troubles with them in the winter or snow......

Anyone care to comment?

I too got a set of Blizzaks in this size and drive over mountain passes and these tires are UNBELIEVABLE. These are great cars in the snow and the Blizzaks will get you home every time.

The AS03 are a great tire for all season use and do very well in snow. They are my other half of the year tire because the Temps vary so much in so co and we can get snow in july.

Having said that if you have a truly cold winter they will get rock hard and don't perform as well as I'd like on ice. Because we see -16 on mornings that I go to work I need a tire that stays pliant.

Only you can decide...I would simply say this if you see -0 or lower invest in the snow tires. They are worth it for all the conditions that come with that. The Blizzak or the nitto. Also consider running 245 45 20 all the way around if it your running 20's.

Good luck

I've got the General AS03. They worked well last winter, but we got a LOT of snow. Every other day it was snowing. I was white knuckled more than I would have liked to be, and there were times I could feel the rear kicking out on me driving down a straight road (slowly). It wasn't much, and it was easy to correct, but I don't like that feeling when there's cars street parked.

I'm buying dedicated winter tires this year.
