Road course tracking an A10. Question.
Having always had a manual. Can you explain how I would track an auto. With 10 gears and paddle shifters are you constantly shifting or does the car do it for you in PTM track mode.
Sorry serious question please dont flame me. These cars are hard to find in a manual around me. The ZL1 1LE I thought was in stock turns out to be intransit after several phone calls. Might settle for an auto. |

The transmission will also go into the performance shift mode once the car see a specific amount of G force even if the wide open throttle has not been achieved yet. Usually my car goes into performance shift mode about half way through my first lap on the track from the G force way before I get to WOT on my warm up lap. The trans also does a great job of always being in the correct gear, mid corner and corner exit shifts are great at not disrupting the car.

Having not had an auto in a performance car since my 1989 Corvette. I am sure they have come a long way and maybe I should test drive one.
Edit. When would you use the paddle shifters. Just playing around in town or is it a feature you dont need. |

The A10 is so much a different animal from any other old school automatic (700R4, 4L60, TH350, TH400, ect...) they really shouldn't be in the same category. I had a 4L60E in my 97 Trans Am and it is a clumsy POS when compared to the A10 in the performance shift mode. Even the A6 in my 2018 Silverado is no comparison to the A10 in the ZL1.
As for the paddle sifters I only use them when I'm goofing around on the street pretending to manually shift my automatic LOL. Honestly I cannot think of any instance during the time I've spent drag racing or tracking the car where I can say I would have an advantage by using the paddle sifters, it actually seems to slow the trans down a little when using them. Going full auto in any performance driving event will yield the best results from what I can tell from my experience thus far. |

The A10 is unbelievable on the road track... It will keep you in the right gear all the time.
You will never need those paddles unless you're playing around or want to drop down for roll racing. |

I agree with most above with the comments about not using the paddles. Certain tracks and experience levels will be better suited with using the paddles. You would think with the A10 the constant fiddling with the paddles would be a problem, but it turns out the fiddling is not constant. The reason is the A10 is perfect for track speeds between 45-160+ with using just gears 3-7. The gear spacing is very nice between 3-7 and you will find that paddling is not a chore. The rev matching of the A10 is superb. The LT4 has so much torque that being in a higher gear numerically will help corner exit throttle application. In "auto" mode the tranny will sometimes hold a gear awkwardly and upshift when you would rather hold the gear mid corner. Experiment on track and you will find your comfort zone. I love the A10 so far and have no regrets. Using a clutch sucks comparatively.

This was my belief as well with the auto's, and have stayed away from "auto" use with the A8 on the road course. I could see that an aggressive unexpected downshift would also be problematic. Is this not as much of an issue on the A10's comparatively??

My experience is the same paddles for goofing around let the tranny do its job on the course, it is way faster and i can concentrate on making the turns. Great transmission. Even first time out with the instructor he went wow let trans do the work.

the "performance shift algorithm" in the A10 supposedly has most issues worked out but even Car and Driver mentioned an unusual downshift/upshift in the "scary off camber turn 10" at VIR. I choose to use the paddles at VIR. The A8 in the Camaro SS isn't as good. The A8 in the ZR1 or C7 Z06 may have a similar shifting program.
