That’s true when you are normally accelerating, bug instead, if you have a manual trans and go to shift to a lower gear such as 5th to 4th but mistakenly hit a lower gear such as second and let the clutch out, the engine will mechanically over-rev potentially causing damage to the engine.

It can happen. I had the LS2 in my 06 Vette pop sitting at a stoplight. I was out of warranty (by time) and GM actually still comped the engine. All I paid was tax. Contact GM and see if they might be willing to help out. Even if they cover 1/2, 1/3, it's better than nothing.

The car has been sluggish on startup which I attributed to a battery that would need replaced soon but don't know if that's at all relevant. |

That doesn't add up, the original owner would have had to purchase in June 2012 and the 13 were not released yet. You do know for that car its 60 months\100,000 miles;
On 2010-2015 Chevy/GMC model year vehicles, the powertrain is covered under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty for 5 years/100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Cadillac will warrant each 2013 and newer vehicle for 6 years or 70,000 miles (5 years or 100,000 miles for 2012 and older models) with no deductible from the original in-service date of the vehicle, for warrantable repairs which are required as a result of defects due to material and/or workmanship to the engine, transmission, or drive systems. Buick will warrant each 2013 and newer vehicle for 6 years or 70,000 miles (5 years or 100,000 miles for 2007 through 2012 model year vehicles). It is fully transferable and there are no fees and no deductibles. On 2016 to current Chevy/GMC model year vehicles, the powertrain is covered under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty for 5 years/60,000 miles, whichever comes first. Coverage for 2016 to present 2500 and 3500 series Heavy Duty (HD) Silverado/Sierra Pickups equipped with a 6.6L Duramax, and certain commercial/government fleet vehicles have powertrain coverage for 5 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Note: Please refer to your GM Dealer or Limited Warranty and Owner Assistance Information booklet for additional details and information on specific components covered under the Limited Powertrain Warranty The Limited Powertrain Warranty is fully transferable and there are no fees and no deductibles. In addition, the Roadside Assistance and Courtesy Transportation programs are offered through the span of the Limited Powertrain Warranty. For more details, please refer to your GM Dealer or Limited Warranty and Owner Assistance Information booklet. |

Hah. I actually have very good comprehension Dad. Just verifying all avenues...and many have disagreed about what "stock" connotes.
Btw: Stock to me means nothing has been altered (apart from oem parts). So, just verifying...to cover all avenues. |

These things can happen. Sorry to hear about it. Unless you have a very qualified mechanic who can pinpoint what the problem was then we're just drawing straws at what the cause of the failure could be.
Good luck.
