Talking Wireless charge pad: iPhone 12 & GM Gen 2 Charger

  • I have a 2017 Camaro ZL1 Vert which has the crappy charger that doesn't work with some phones - Chevy says you have to install the upgraded wireless charge unit.
  • My iPhone XR didn't fit correctly and didn't charge.
  • I upgraded to the iPhone 12 last weekend.
  • It fits the Camaro rear seat wireless charger - iPhone 12 is slightly smaller than XR with squared edges - dimensions below are for 12 (white) and XR (black).
  • It charges.
  • I think I got an OK deal with T-mobile via the Apple website: 128 Gb model was about $900, -$250 for trade in XR, -$30 off from T-Mobile, -$150 Visa card from T-mobile, it's unlocked and can change to any carrier, e-sim.
  • I'm STOKED!

Thumbs up Wireless charge pad: iPhone 12 & GM Gen 2 Charger

  • Because my Gen 1 wireless charger did not charge my iPhone12 unless it was POSITIONED PERFECTLY, I upgraded to the Gen 2 charger module.
  • Now the wireless charger works well with my iPhone 12.
  • Per the folks at GM Parts Club, "This module has upgraded from 2 coils to 6 to give it more power to charge the newer phones."
  • Per Infotainment.com, "Most 2015-2018 GM vehicles that came equipped with the wireless charging option K4C or 5ZI were built with stage 1 charging capabilities. This led to issues when the iPhone 8 and iPhoneX were released as they require a higher standard of battery charging. Infotainment.com has officially released a "retrofit" kit that will take a stage 1 system and update it to the latest & greatest stage 2 wireless smartphone charging technology."
  • Below is the web page, and email with total cost, and a link to YouTube install instructions.

It's a small thing, but great when it works, isn't it. I installed the upgraded wireless charging module myself (and got an even better deal on a used, but perfect, Samsung Galaxy S10e at $199, hehe). It's rated higher and charges faster, so I get usable net charging even when using wireless AA with navigation and stream audio via bluetooth.

For an iPhone 13 (mini) with a MagSafe case, will the wireless charger still work?

  • I posted the dimensions for the iPhone 13 and 13 mini - it looks like it will fit the charger no problem.
  • Now regarding the MagSafe case - you’d have to try.
  • Maybe a question that would help - does a normal desktop charge pad work? If so, the car charging pad should work too.
  • Hope this helps.

I tested it and it works with any Qi charger and I don't mind the lower charging power, there is less heat in the battery and hence less battery degradation.
Now I have to buy a wireless CarPlay receiver and I should be all set.
