Lost Key Fob

Went on a family vacation this weekend and long story short, my key fob ended up falling in the lake and the spare key I have is uncut and unprogrammed. Is it possible to get the key cut by a locksmith and program the key fob myself? It looks like you can from the manual but I’m not sure if you need a working key fob. Anyone help would be awesome as I will have to get my car towed to a dealership.

You go to the dealership parts department with your VIN. They sell you a blank key, for a ridiculous amount of money. Then you have to walk over to the Service Dept and pay them an outrageous amount of money ($180 for me) and wait for the guy who cuts keys to come back from lunch, and then you get your new key, which you have to program yourself.

The problem with that is I need to head back home tomorrow and the dealerships aren’t open. The dealership said I would need to have the car towed in earlier today as well.

i learnt years ago you guard both key fobs as if your life depended on it lol.
for some reason you will wave goodbye to half a months salary just for a fekin key.
never lost one as i'm very careful not to.

Yeah if you don't have the title, they're going to want to see the car.

Sounds like your options may be extended vacation or tow it home and hit your local dealership Tuesday.

Did the spare key come with the car when you bought it? If so, it should have been cut and programmed already - while it won’t help you get the car where it needs to, you at least have a good argument to make them do the programming for free. You could also argue that they stranded you by providing you with a useless key fob and should pay for your tow, but that will be much harder to win.

Good luck!

Slightly unrelated but is there a way to program a third key as a replacement?

Just curious and you don't have to say. Was down to 1 FOB in my 2019 Grand Sport (washing machine death) and then lost the other one in a parking lot. 2 new FOB'S and programming $545 at the Chevy dealer. What are they getting for Camaro FOB's as I no longer have a C7 but new 2SS 1LE. Thanks.

Around $300 for the fob and programming. You can save about $60 ordering the fob online.

If I remember correctly, when I tried to make a 3rd fob with my 6th gen RS, it failed and I also had to reprogram fob #2.

we bought our car with only one fob. replacement shipped next day off ebay for $40-was brand new but you have to watch what you order and from who. it took me an hour to program it in the garage. it's MUCH easier if you have both and doing a 3rd but only having one, you have to wipe that one and program 2 new ones. process takes 30-ish minutes but I had to do it 2x as first time the second fob didn't program.
I did not take the key in yet to get cut but any locksmith should be able to do it for a $20 bill. no real reason at this point to get it cut as it's our spare.

doesn't help the OP being out of town but if you are home, ordering and programming a second key is not difficult nor spensive.
