The flat dashboard is very convenient for this. And at autocross I put the GPS receiver onto the same mount instead. I do a similar setup using magnets. I have a metal plate attached to the bottom of my RD, and a magnetic mount on my dashboard. Makes it very quick and easy to put the RD up and take it down.
