Correct, the remaining 1% are all the other gases we breathe but useless to point out.

True. I didn't consider other applications but temperature plays a role. As I said oxygen molecules permeate through the rubber better than the bigger nitrogen molecules, so if you give it enough time and continue to add air when needed you'll eventually yield a higher percentage of nitrogen in your tires.

But I digress...

The air in my tires is always 78% nitrogen (unless I pump them up on a really humid day....then its about 75-76%).

One nice part of nitrogen is dry air. We have line dryers all over our shop to keep water out of our tires and tools. Many of tires I have dismounted have a significant amount of water in them. I also seem to replace tire monitors more often or these "wet" tires.

If you were racing then yes the benifit is there. Otherwise no short of its perfectly dry.

I add a few drops of snake oil in mine.. works just as well as nitrogen.

When I bought the car it included a road hazard warranty with the nitrogen filled tires and the dealer refills them for free. I think it's just a marketing gimmick to keep me going back to the dealer, but the tire warranty already took care of a roofing nail once with no questions or hassle. The dealer has given me competitive or better prices on other work too so I'm going along with it.

While it isn't stupid question, it is one that has been covered MULTIPLE times. Just typing nitrogen in the "search this forum" box gives you pages of results.

This I agree with 100%

My understanding is that the factory uses nitrogen because of several reasons. It is dryer than air so it condenses less, which in turn, will not foul the tpms. I was also told that the molecules are larger, therefore, less will escape from the tire, keeping the pressure more stable for a longer period.

Just my $.02
