Track? Autocross?

Anyone going to the track or doing autocross this season? Do you go with a club or particular organization?

I've wanted to try both out for a while. Would be nice to tag along with some people. I don't know much about the track nor autocross scene.

Thanks!

Did a few autocross sessions a few years back. I mostly go to the dragway now.

I really want to see one of the V6 1LEs in action, and this is a pretty forgiving track to try it out!

Definitely... You certainly got the car for it!!! My first HPDE event of the year that "was" scheduled for Fri 4/6 got cancelled due to mother nature surprising Palmer Motorsports Park with 1.5" of the white stuff. Although, we still ended up driving on out to watch others enjoy their track time yesterday (Saturday), just to get back out into the atmosphere and socialize a bit in the nicer sunny weather that they ended up with. Saw only one Camaro giving it hell out there that day though, and it was his first event. He had scheduled his time through the SCDA club that was there that day. For me... currently I'm scheduled to do 4/27, and 5/18. Would be nice join forces with some forum members for sure! Check out the track website or maybe give them a call.

I see you are in Massachusetts. NASA North East runs track events all over the Northeast. Next one in April 13th Lime Rock.

Thanks for the info everyone.

I can’t drive very far, since I have family duties. So unfortunately Limerock, and the NASA events are all too far for me.

I'm near the RI/MA border, so Palmer and Thompson are closest to me. And looking on Motorsportsreg.com looks like Autocross is held regularly in Devens Airfield, Ayer MA.

Do y’all use https://www.motorsportreg.com/ to look and register for events?

Where should I shop around for a helmet?

Thanks!

Best thing is to go to a track event that lets you rent helmets from them (we do it at NASA) - this way you can see what sizes fits you best. Comfort is very important when choosing a helmet.

Of course you can measure your head and try to wing it and buy it on-line (Amazon, Summit Racing, etc).

Look for one rated Snell SA2015. Most track events have a minimum requirement of Snell SA2010, but 2015 will become more of a requirement moving forward.

Do not buy a motorcycle helmet for road course driving.

Good luck.

SCCA Track Night in America allows for M-rated helmets. Not worth it for those who wish to get more serious, but if you just want to attend this its fine. Related quote and link below.

"Helmets certified as meeting the most current or the two most recent applicable Snell, FIA, or SFI standards are acceptable.
Acceptable standards include:
Snell ratings: SA2015, SAH2015, SA2010, SAH2010, SA2005, M2015, M2010, M2005"

I still can't wrap my head around that (no pun intended).

I agree. But while there is always the potential for danger, maybe they figure TNIA is a bit more laid back, with more beginners than a dedicated track day. So, maybe they decided in order to inconvenience fewer people, they will allow M-rated for this more laid back event.

Maybe there is some data they found that X% of people moving into TNIA have had an experience where they used an M-rated helmet, like kart racing, and could capture more registrations by not making them go buy an SA-rated helmet.

Have you had any issue with the noise limit at Lime Rock with your 1LE?

I have the NPP and wouldn't want to haul all the way out there just to find out I'm over.

Thanks!

Maybe. Just makes me wince if anything goes wrong...

LOL - I will find out this Friday (the 13th).

I just got my 1LE (still in break-in period), and Lime Rock on Friday will be my first track event in this car. I asked around but no one has been able to answer if 1LE will have problem at Lime Rock.

Lime Rock has an 84db noise limit - but they measure it at ˜50 ft. I see that people busted Laguna Seca's noise limit (>90db). But I think (not sure) Laguna Seca measures closer to the car.

I'm going to start the day prob with a self imposed 5,000RPM redline. I should finish break-in half way through the day. And will raise to 6,000 then 6,500. If I get busted it will be near the end of the day

And then you have a second chance, after you make "repairs". My "repair" will be to put the exhaust in tour mode (not even sure that does anything when you are WOT)

Lime Rock is a momentum track - if you have to short shift to avoid busting db limits it is not a prob. Will cost you ˜1 sec per lap.
