My 2018 V6 Camaro Manual recommends 5W-30 dexos1 Gen2 but
also has some vague wording that suggests that other dexos1 Gen2
certified oil grades are acceptable. Especially in colder climates.

I read the 2019 Camaros want 0W-40 dexos1 Gen2 but the wording
suggests (to me) that this is mostly to allow for track use and that
5W-30 dexos1 Gen2 is fine if you don't track the car.

I will never track my Camaro but I flog it generously to get up to
the speed limit then I coast. Roads are flat and straight in Florida.

So I think the 0W-40 dexos1 makes zero sense for my non-track
driving and if anything it could be a drag on my V6's acceleration
because:

Since 0W indicates how easily the oil flows when cold, I would think
Mobil-1 0W-30 dexos1 Gen2 would make the V6 more spry for the
short trips around town because the oil is still cold. Most of my driving
is short 10 mile or less segments.



This graph does not show 0W oil but it does show how viscosity changes
as the oil warms up with 5W vs 10W.

From everything I read, It seems like 0W-30 dexos1 Gen2 will allow the
V6 to be more lively for my "cold oil" driving while still having the same
30 rating for viscosity at higher temps as the manual recommended
5W-30 dexos1 Gen2.

It seems like Chevrolet likes the 0W rating for the 2019 Camaros so
my hunch is that 0W-30 Mobil-1 might be a great sweet spot for
non-tracking owners. Plus OW oil leads to less wear on startup.

Please don't weigh in if you're just going to quote the 2018 manual
recommendation of 5W-30. I already know this. It's obvious with the
2019's that Chevrolet is rethinking the Camaro's oil recommendations.

You would need 0 weight when it's colder. Florida doesn't get too cold. Stick with 5w-30.

It's not that I want to use the OW oil in Zero degree weather. It has
nothing to do with cold weather.

OW oil is lighter than 5W and will allow the car to run better for the
short 5 to 10 mile trips that I do because the oil is still in the process
of trying warm up when my driving segment is complete.

You could run a 0w oil, no problem. Reason why Chevy and other manufacturers are recommending it now is MPG ratings, that's it.

My '18 Miata calls for a 0w-20 here in the states. Elsewhere? 5w-30.

Everything I read says that the OW oil give a little better MPG because it is lighter in
weight and thus provides less drag on the engine.

For the V6 this has to equate to a noticeably more responsive throttle response and
maybe more punch. Especially in the first 10 minutes of driving the car. If this is true,
I wonder why more people don't discuss OW as a benefit.

I have 2 free dealer oil changes to use on my 2018 and the dealer will only put 5W-30
in the car under the program so I will need to wait a while to try it out for myself.

The weight specs for both oils is very similar with the 5-30 being a slightly stouter oil.

You would not notice any difference and would stick with the 5w-30 for Florida.
