Tire Selection? first event for me

Ok so I am going to be hitting up my first autocross event next Saturday (super excited btw). I am currently in a zl1 1le rocking some Michelin 4s tires with stock sizing. Do you guys think I am going to be able to do decent with them? Are do I need to grab something else before the event like some r888r? I don't mind ordering a set of 18-inch rims and get something completely different for spirited driving or track days. Any help would be appreciated, I am probably just overthinking it.

If you are just looking to have fun then it doesn't matter what tires you are on. 4s will be fine.

If you are looking to be competitive then you're going to have to get the fast 200tw like re71rs, a052, crs, rt660. Don't bother with r888r, they're garbage for this application.

Kinda hard to answer in general terms without knowing how good a driver you are.

If, for example, you're a chicken like me, the PS4S will be absolutely fine, check out the Tyre Reviews channel on youtube for reference materials; if, however, you're as good as some members here (khcoaching is a race driving coach, just as an example), you will not be satisfied.

I'd like to think I am a decent driver but idk lol. The only thing is I can't find any of those tires especially the re71s in the stock size I need.

You won't find any of the fastest 200tw competition tires in stock size. You will be running 315/30/18 squared

If it's your first event ever and you have no previous track experience, why not just use your current 4S tires. There'll be plenty of learning to do and improvement in your technique before the tires are going to make much difference in your time.

The first rule of thumb is to work on your driving skills BEFORE upgrading equipment (upgrade the driver first). The 4S is a summer tire and should hold up fine to this abuse. You'll reach a point where the tires are holding you back, but in the beginning, stickier tires will likely just hide your flaws a allow you to build bad habits.

+1, great advice. Run what ya brung for your first few SEASONS. No need to spend extra coin on the hobby until you decide you like Auto X and then you'll get enough seat time to outdrive your tires. I ran my Z/28 through a couple of seasons and the Michelins worked great. My problem was throttle discipline. I just like to drive fast and a bit rowdy. You'll find that with your ZL1 you'll have an overabundance of HP and it will take a bit of practice to use it effectively. Don't get your feelings hurt when 4 cyl Miatas run significantly better times.

I disagree with the run what ya brung first, comment regarding starting out. Too many times I see Novice drivers on all-seasons trying to do autocross. That's just not going to work. Yes they will still have fun, but the car will have massive amounts of understeer. They aren't going to learn anything, except that their car has a VERY narrow window of grip. My philosophy has always been to show up in a properly prepped car. I did my first event on the stock tires and for the second event it was on RE-71's. I wanted to see what the car was capable of, and I wanted to have my driving skills improve faster, on a competitive car. To be fair though, the PS4 tires will likely be fine for autocross, particularly if it's going to be hot out. They won't overheat like an A052 Yok, or other autocross tires.

The PS4S is a fine tire to use for one's first autocross event. It will hold up to any heat and has a bonus of being the best rain tire available in case the weather goes sideways. To the OP: you may become a good autocross driver, but you won't be one on your first day. It takes seat time and effort to become good, so don't worry about being competitive with others the first time. Just worry about learning what's going on and improving your own runs. If it turns out to be something you enjoy, keep doing events the rest of this season and start pondering what class you want to run in. Once we know that, we can make recommendations for seriously competitive rubber, both brand/model and sizes.

Don't sleep on the regular Goodyear F1 Supercar 3. Just as good as a "super 200" when warm.

Thanks for everyone's help, I just ran the ps4s and it did a lot better than I would have expected. I had a blast and plan to keep going to events.
