Cam install complete - GPI SS1 LS3

I finally got my car back up and running after the cam install. I am still working with Ryan from GPI on the remote tune. He has made one revision so far, but it definitely needs tightening up. Overall the install went well. I had a few hours of increased frustration, such as getting the damned oil pump bolts back in for the pickup tube. I wound up tying a piece of fishing line around the rearmost bolt (I have the pickup tube girdle with 2 bolts) which saved my ass a multitude of times, since I dropped the bolt more times than I can count into the pan.

Other issues were dealing with a subpar spring compressor from Amazon. It left very little room for my fat fingers to install the locks. I advise anyone doing this to just spend the $ on a good dual spring compressor.

Anyhow, here is an idle video. Not bad for the SS1 cam. Sorry for the decreased sound on the right speaker. I must have been covering a mic with those fat fingers. An no, contrary to what the GF says, that is NOT Shrek's shadow recording the video.

I will get a cold start video uploaded soon for those interested. But will wait until the tune is further along.

UPDATE:

Updating the thread with a new Cold Start video. Ryan from GPI completed the tune a couple days ago. Tell you what, that man was amazing to work with. I think he did 7 tune revisions based on my datalogs. He listened to every request and input I gave him regarding how the car was behaving and adjusted accordingly. I am so happy with how the car is performing and will use GPI again without hesitation. Based on my mods he is estimating 450-460 rwhp. I am hoping to have it dyno'd this summer.

Cold start, seems to go into closed loop idle around the 1:20 mark:

Awesome sound !! Comp cams makes a awesome tool and you can change out two springs at time . Used that and a magnet and it was pretty slick.
Also idk if my research is correct but is there not a way to unbolt the oil pan without lifting the motor of the lints alittle ?

Thanks man. Yea I could have lifted the engine a bit but didn't want to mess with the mounts. I unbolted the entire pan and let it drop onto the crossmember and then placed a wedge in between it and the block to get it as wide open as possible. As for the spring tool...I cheaped out. That was my fault entirely, which is not like me as I usually take any opportunity to buy more good tools. If it wasn't for the magnet tool from Harbor Freight I would have probably dropped a ton of valve locks lol.

It's crazy how much louder the cam makes the exhaust sound in person. I have a straight through axle back (muffler delete setup) and a Legato axle back in storage. I was considering just trying the Legato on the car now to see how I like it. I mean I absolutely love the Outlaws, but the Legato is a chambered Flowmaster 40 series knock off and I am curious how it will sound with the cam.

But I have swapped back and forth a few times previously and always come back to the Outlaws. I have done it so many times its like a 20 minute swap now.

Thanks btw. I love it. Just getting used to the feeling of having less brakes. It is definitely pushing. I know I will eventually regret going with the SS1 as I plan to go with a converter in the next year. But I figured I would play it safe for now.

Damn, that’s some lope for an SS1! I’ve always thought that’s what I’d go for. Be interesting to hear what you think after 500 miles...like man, I wish I’d have went for the II! Keep us posted. Then come do mine!

I kind of already do regret the SS1, but tuning isn't complete yet so I should just hold my horses. It was a really hard decision to make and I went back and forth on it. But a converter is probably a while off for me.

I wish I would have measured for pushrods. Ryan recommended 7.4" since I had my heads milled .015, but when I had the engine rebuilt using the stock cam the builder told me to keep the stock pushrods at that time, and the car was an absolute beast. GPI uses a smaller base circle core and normally recommends people with stock heads and gasket thickness use the 7.425". So I probably could have gone with the 7.425" with such a minimal mill, but I understand he would know more than me for sure. I just don't want to leave anything on the table.

Honestly I haven’t gotten to it yet. Had a few other irons in the fire the last month or so. Hopefully I’ll get on it while the word is shut down.
