Some might say that the ZL1 1LE is possessed. Maybe it is...

It was a hot day in Arizona when I noticed this:

Seems to be the same exact issue. I'll wait until everything cools down significantly to go have a look. I don't mind if it is only when it gets hot does it do that, but it might be worth a fix.

That's not too bad at all.

Had a look when it "cooled down" here in Phoenix, and it still really bad. I'm hoping that it won't remain that way, going to see if Chevy will cover it on their time to correct it, along with the horrid alignment.

Thanks for the tip. Mine was doing this as soon as it started getting warm, so about a month or two after buying it. Mine started doing it on the driver's side but then moved to the passenger side as well. Zip-tied it right up, saves me a trip and hassle of going to the dealer.

Going to the dealer sucks...

Glad I found this thread, noticed mine is doing the same thing on both sides of the car. The lines were perfect when I bought it in Jan. till today.
I was thinking (hoping) it maybe a heat issue as this has been the hottest so far this year. Also due to the fact I remember reading about the front bumper on the corvette having similar issues.
At lest there seems to be a simple fix if it doesn't pop back into place.

Thanks for posting this solution

I bought the GM body kit for my SS and installed it myself. The rear diffuser that came with it required me to remove the rear bumper. When I put the bumper back on both sides of the car had the same gap you had. I used your zip tie solution and it solved the issue.

I know this is a ZL1 discussion but, my SS does it too... equally on both sides. I haven't really had a chance to check it in cooler weather since I've had it 6 months and live in the Florida heat.

I wish I could have seen this thread and did the zip tie trick while swapping to GM dark tails two months ago. It's not too bad and doesn't really bother me anymore so, not going to worry about it.

My father has worked as a body man his whole life and has owned his own shop for a majority of that time so, it's habit for him to look at gaps and lines and he's actually the one who pointed it out to me. He also kindly pointed out that the gap between the edge of the passenger door and rear quarter was larger than on the drivers side. I told him I'd take him for a ride if he stopped inspecting everything

Mine returned close to normal about a week after it kind of cooled down some. In fact it's really not worth pulling the taillights out to zip tie as it's not that noticeable right now.

Mine is dong it as well, just noticed it today. Most likely heat related as others have said.
Thanks for the tip, I'll be doing mine tomorrow

Good thread and the pics are excellent. I have a black 2SS 1LE and have not noticed it yet but now will be looking for it closely.

But I'm just curious where the expansion/movement of the plastic bumper is moving to once the zip ties are in place? Given that the material obviously expands due to the heat, if the movement is restricted by the zip ties but the material is still heating up, doesn't that expansion have to go somewhere by the laws of physics?

Just curious if you have noticed a change elsewhere once you zip tied the bumper from moving outward?
