2014 SS automatic paddle shift.. what’s the dod conversion to an LS?

I’ve heard about converting from the L99 to the LS. How is that done?

I believe it can be done by replacing the lifters alone with factory LS3 ones. However, if you're digging that far into the engine, you might as well replace/upgrade some other valvetrain parts, which is why most kits include other things.

Ok, I guess I should probably search this but what the hell..

Why does the DOD bother people so much, other than the loss of a few ponies? I can understand maybe changing it if you’re doing performance-adders but other than that, is it really a big deal?

The DOD lifters end up failing at high mileage, hence why people convert to the LS3 lifters.

Gotcha. Guess GM still didn’t learn from the Caddy V 8 6 4 that I remember from the 80s.

You'll need to replace the DOD/AFM lifters to LS3 or more people recommend LS7 lifters. There's also a DOD/AFM delete kit for eliminating the other parts associated with DOD/AFM.

The V8-6-4 wasn't as bad as the history revisionists would like you to believe. The concept was developed by the Eaton Corp. The V8-6-4 "368 cid" was actually based upon the Cadillac big block 500/472/425 engine architecture.

The biggest problem was the slight vibration it had when it went into "V-6" mode. If they went from full V8 mode to V4 mode like a modern V8, it probably would have worked much better.

Unfortunately, the relative lack of horsepower back in those days and the limited transmission gearing available (3 speeds only at the time) would have made that nearly impossible. So, an intermediate step was devised to bridge the gap between V8 and V4 mode.

I remember reading the concept was abandoned after only one year due to the fact that the EPA testing did not allow it to go into V4 mode to fully realize the increased MPG benefit to help wkth CAFE improvement.

So, Cadillac abandoned the concept and rushed in the new HT4100 that was being developed for the coming downsized FWD cars.

Well you want to convert to the LS lifters and remove AFM and DOD, but KEEP VVT!

I was under the impression that the L99 had different pistons than the LS3?

It does they have a relief in the top I believe for the VVT. So it will never be a true LS3 unless the pistons are changed as you note. But I would keep the VVT as others have noted which makes it a beast when cammed that way.

Indeed! 450 RWHP on an L99 with GPI's smallest VVT cam!
