Warm Up
Do you guys/gals always start your car and let it warm up a bit before taking off, or do you just fire it up and go? Not specifically talking about cold temp driving. I've noticed that if I just get in my car, fire it up and go it will be very jurky, kind of spit/sputter for the first few seconds after which it's just fine. If I let it idol a few seconds till the idol settles down it's fine.
Just never really had to do this with any other vehicle. Tahoe I can get in, turn the key and go. |

My car does the same, but I usually warm it up before I go to work. Like you I wait for the RPM's to settle if I plan to go right away.

I start mine up let it idle for a min or so while I'm plugging in my phone and decide what type of music I want to listen too, by then my temp gauge starts rising (which happens fairly quick) and I head out. I haven't had any issues with hesitation or lugging and been doing it this way for years. I don't really get on it until the tires are at normal temp and my oil temp is where it normally runs.

If you want a nice smooth 1-2 shift. Let it warm up. Manually pop it into 2nd for at least 15 seconds. Then I do it one more time for the hell of it. That’ll fix the 1-2 shift jerkiness.

In all my cars, I have always waited at least until rpms idle down. In the winter it's usually a good 2-3 minutes or until the front defrosters makes it easier to scrap off the ice.

I normally do as well. Just happen to take off a couple times right away the past week. Winter I always remote start my vehicles and let them run a few minutes.

After initial start up , I let her idle a few minutes, then I drive low RPMs , til the oil temperature is above 160 deg. Then I drive normal

I noticed the same thing and this will happen even after I've waited for the RPM needle to settle. It will jerk when letting off the clutch but goes away once I gas it. Weird.

This is 2023 we have fuel injection not a carb, in the days of old you had to let the engine warm up because you had a choke. Computers take care of air fuel mixture now.

So no matter warm or cold ambient temps, I always let the car idle for at least 3 minutes or so. Luckily I have some quiet roads by me so I putter around and shift at less than 2,000 rpm until the oil temp reaches at least 150 degrees. After that I drive a little more "normal" but still don't give it the beans until I'm at 200 on the oil.
I've always believed in letting a car reach full operating temp before pushing it. Naturally on a manual car, this helps the shifts smooth out as well. The trans is definitely notchier when cold, but that's to be expected. I can still get really smooth shifts even when it's ice cold though. |
