Car Trailer for ZL1 1LE
I'm shopping for a car trailer to haul a ZL1 1LE back and forth to the track, and I'm looking for advice/recommendations.
I'd like to find something with 5K tandem axles that is reasonably lightweight. I'm considering lengths between 18 and 24 feet. My primary concern is being able to load the car easily without dragging the front fascia. I've been looking at ATC's open trailer http://www.aluminumtrailer.com/open-car-trailer as well as the ATC Raven enclosed trailer with an escape door. http://www.aluminumtrailer.com/raven...um-car-trailer I plan to pull it with my 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 with a 6.2 and the max trailering package. It's rated for 11,800 pounds, but at the end of the day it's still a half-ton truck. |

An enclosed is great, but it will certainly not be very easy on the truck with the wind catch and all. Where we live I'd recommend more towards the open trailer for the hills, etc. I have an open trailer now with a front nose and use almost 9ft ramps on a dove tail trailer to avoid loading/unloading damage. If I were to pick up another open trailer it would be the SUNDOWNER -ULTRA (22'ft) and I believe they come with 8' ramps and have a lower deck height than some. Hope this helps.

Serious question I've always been curious about....why not drive the car if it's street legal?

Having a truck to put a jack, spare tires, canopy, chairs, fuel, etc. is also nice. |

Sorry, not a great pic, but here are some thoughts from a guy on his third trailer...
Open trailers are great...but fuel tanks, spares, tools all need to be stored in your truck. I started with an open trailer. If you get an enclosed, get 24' at least. If you get into tracking you'll need the space, trust me. My second trailer was a used 20' Haulmark. If you get an enclosed trailer, get a driver's side jump door for ingress and egress. Climbing in and out the drivers window gets old quickly. This one is a 24' and love it. Regardless of the trailer you buy, get race ramps for loading. They make it a breeze and no scuffed splitters. PM me if you want any other thoughts. Good luck!

If you guys can fit it in an enclosed you won't regret doing so.

I have a 16' Aluma open trailer with custom 11' ramps that store under the trailer. The deck is 16" above the ground. I pull it behind a Saab 97X aero with a 6 litre. It hauls down the highway at 75 mph up and down hills. I've no problem storing tools, tires and refreshments in my truck, My empty trailer weights under 1200 lbs, has 3500 lb axles.
My recommendations: 1/ Stay small and light; 2/ Get long ramps so you don't need to carry extra wood or rubber extensions; 3/ Brakes on two axles; 4/ Buy and extra wheel and tire for that one day when you need it. Good luck, |
