I know the used car market is going back up again. Sport cars especially, it's the time of the year people get the itch. New car prices have been high for a while and haven't come back down.

I'm not banking on it, but it's crazy to think of sports cars as appreciating assets now.

The difference in price from 2022 to 2023, for the exact same trim for my car is + $2500. Granted there’s a $500 rebate, but that’s still a pretty big increase… considering a rising interest rate environment.

Yeah I think even though supply is still somewhat limited dealers are going to struggle to sell for msrp by the end of the year/after summer. It’s pretty crazy to me that you could get a base v8 mustang or camaro for 32k or less 10 years ago. Now the base cars are pushing 40k. Idc that they are better, you are going to lose potential buyers at these prices.

I paid 34,900 before taxes for my 2021 LT1. Same car is now 39,800 at the same dealer.

My first car was originally $51K with the added big brake package. I think my current one was $48K, both 2SS. I got them for $34K and $28K used at 3 and 4 yrs old with typical mileage.

That's a good point, People are wanting deals under MSRP. So, if you raise MSRP by a crazy amount, you still let the customer think they are getting a good deal but you also still make record profits.
I got my GMC in 2018, MSRP was 62,000. I paid 49,000. Deals like that do not exist any more, especially considering the same truck is now closer to 80k. |

My 21' 2SS I got in 2020 was $48,915 sticker MSRP (with 10-speed, MRC, NPP, Front Splitter, Carbon Flash Wheels and Black Lug Nuts).
Dealer price was $46,739 ($-2176 off MSRP) + tax/title/etc... OTD of $50,783. Pricing it out today on the website for the same options, MSRP of $51,350... Since you are likely paying MSRP these days... Would be $51,350 + taxes/titles/fees. So I paid about ~$4611 less (plus taxes) two years ago then I would today for the same car... That also doesn't include the surge in car loan rates if not paying cash today. I locked in 1.99% APR for 5-year on 40K (rest was down payment) at the credit union, today the same credit union is at 5.49%... Total interest goes from $2056 up to $5832 (so add another $3776 just in interest to the above). In total, be $8500-9000 difference in total cost today. That is wild. I purchased my 2018 1SS 1LE new for just over $40,000 out the door back in August of 2018. It currently has about 63,000 miles on it.
A quick look at cargurus shows exactly one 2018 1SS 1LE available for sale (70,000 miles) $35,995. The price is noted as being about $3K higher than it should be. So mine has depreciated between $4,000 and $7,000 dollars in not quite 5 years. It wouldn't surprise me to see those prices start to bounce back up. My MR2 was about $25,000 back in 1993 and would probably go for north of $20,000 today, though at one point it was below $10,000. |
