Agressive Stance- Old School Rake?
When I was a teenager I simply put air shocks under the back of my hot rod to produce the forward leaning incline that I wanted.
Can this be done to the Gen 5? I really don't want to lower the front but I would like to see that back end lifted for that nostalgic look that I remember. Ideas? Photos? I would love to see and hear your thoughts. |

How much would you want to raise the rear?
The Camaro uses a normal shock in the rear, so you could probably get an air shock in there, however ride quality might suffer a bit. Unlike the old school cars that had a solid axle, if you were to utilize air shocks in the rear, it would probably necessitate some changes to the rear alignment since it is an IRS car or you could end up with accelerated tire wear issues. This would also require you to monitor the air pretty regularly to ensure ride height is consistent. A new set of coil springs that raise the back end 1, 1-1/2", might be the better option. It would still require the alignment adjustment, but it would be a 'once and done' type thing, and shouldn't affect ride quality. -Scott |

You can have spacers machined up for your rear springs, handling and alignment will be affected.

im thinking it would mess up your ride and handling to raise the rear too high.my old pontiac was raised in the rear, lowered in the front and the handling wasnt very good.

Definitely! Rubber rake, you'll have to re gear to compensate though.

Lower the front and leave the rear stock. This is your best option for making it look like it's straight outta 1981.

taller tires, I think "NOT"
There's a limit how much of a difference you can have in the diameter of the front & rear tires because you'll mess up the computer's breaking response. Not only that, your traction & handling will be out the window with the weight transfered changed.

So is there a good option out there for off the shelf parts to raise the rear end? I too like the raked look but don't want to lower the front I would rather raise the rear.

There isnt much option other than lowering the front. With independent suspension in the rear it doesnt lend to being lifted up like the old school cars.

The air shocks and or shackles on the leaf springs to lift the rear of cars was to gain clearance for wider tires. Otherwise the fenders would scrub and cut into the tire, that hung out past the fenders. It worked, and looked cool doing so.

Wouldn't taller springs or a spacer achieve the goal of raising the rear end, even with independent rear suspension? I assume the issue is nobody is making said parts.
