Clutch recommendations
Unfortunately looking at clutch options again, just replaced mine with stock clutch and Katech aluminum flywheel. Clutch was holding up on the road course until I put slicks on it, then when 705 hp/ 745 ft lbs torque at the wheels met sticky tires it began to slip in 2nd gear coming out of the corners. I could detune the motor, but not what I would like to do. Might need to beef up the axles, transmission and differential if I want to run these tires? Not wild about the aluminum flywheel on the street after spending some time with it. Always have to be paying attention not to stall it and ran into tuning issues with the rev match. On the track it was great.
Does anyone have experience with McLeod, Mantic, RPS or other any suggestions? I’ve been doing my research but they all seem to have “low inertia” flywheels or clutches, I want something that will handle the horsepower and grip, but still be enjoyable to drive on the street. This job is a pain, didn’t expect to be doing it again but would sure like to get it right this time. Last edited by Sephx1; 05-16-2023 at 11:13 PM. |

Check out the Monster LT1-S Triple disk. Drives just like stock.

I'm running McLeod RTX (twin disc), drives like stock. No regrets, not saying it is the only/best option but an option.

I don't have experience with any of Mantic's LT or Twin Disc options, but I had a single disc behind an L33/T56 combo in a Miata. What I was most impressed with was their customer service and tech support when I had an issue with a bent finger on the pressure plate from shipping. They, as a company, were absolutely fantastic, and I would not hesitate to give them a shot if I needed a clutch for my ZL1.
I would give them a call and tell them what you are wanting and see if they have an application that will fit your need. |

Are you sure the clutch is slipping? LT4 and LT5 clutches commonly survive over 1000rwhp and nearly as much torque. Is it possible something else is going on?

Which made me extremely happy (one less thing to spend money on with this platform), as my 5th gen ZL1 was slipping at 630-ish.

Note, im not at 1000whp but I didn't swap mine due to failure/slipping, the trans was coming out and I did it as preventative maintenance. Stock clutch is a beast.

Was looking for an upgraded clutch for street and track use. Zach specced out the LT5 clutch with Katech aluminum flywheel. Feed back from others is that its stout and maintains stock drivability. Seems like you cant really go wrong with the set up unless your application calls for something else, granted im a NA 427 with 605/550 at the wheel.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Not sure what else it could be. I’ll see if I can edit and post some PDR video of when it happens.

Now that I have some experience with driving with the Lightweight flywheel, id say maybe your tune could be something that could be tweaked. With the lightweight flywheel, it drove damn near like stock. Was able to get out of first with essentially no throttle and take right off. It took minimal adjusting to get used to it. Granted this is just my experience and could be different for others.

Another thought I had (thinking outside the box) was what BMR motor mounts might do. With less flexing there might be a better feel with the clutch. |

I had a Mantic triple in my 5th gen ZL1 and have a Monster triple in my 6th Gen. I had no issued with the Mantic, but I will say the pedal is definitely stiffer on the Mantic than the Monster is.
