TPMS, and/or How I Avoided a Costly Mistake
Gang,
Short version, has probably happened to others but if not, take an extra moment to be sure: Got in car at end of work day and info system said LR tire was flat. Hmmm, hadn't necessarily noticed; got out, looked fine, like a good doober even threw a gauge on it and all OK at 38psi cold. Got back in car, went to pull out but just before doing so, and for some miraculous reason, I thought, "WAITAMINNIT -- check the other side". Got out, checked RR, bingo! Flat. (Luckily I work for a construction company and we have tire changing equipment on-site, so no major inconvenience issues there.) The car received a brand-new set of tires just before I bought it, so they must have switched the wheels when they mounted the new set. What made me decide to look I have no idea, but boy am I glad I didn't pull out and trash the RR wheel, and who knows what else! Will probs not bother with that "re-learn tool" I've seen mentioned elsewhere, now that I know the rears have been switched. (FWIW was also very impressed with how light the wheel/tire combo was, once off the car.)

Awesome tip from The Chief on double-checking other wheels, thanks
By the way, I bought the $15 relearn tool and have used it a few times, it's a simple and smooth 1-minute process. While it would nicer to have the car autodetect TPMS sensor positions, this really isn't a big deal IMO.

The tool cost $12 shipped on Amazon. Process took me less than a minute. Could also swing it by some where like discount tire or even do the classic amazon use+return.

I had the exact same thing happen to me a few years ago on a Yukon, I always re check / reset myself after a dealership / shop rotation.

I don't think Discount will usually reset the monitors unless you ask them. I always do, but got the re-learn tool anyway. Helps if you do a rotation after new brake pads or some other maintenance.

My dealer will do the TPMS for free. All I have to do is drive in, and they do it in about 3 min, no waiting.

I also know of someone who got a flat on track and checked the indicated side in hot pit and saw nothing wrong then proceeded to go back on track with a flat on the other side and blow it out. This thread is very good advice. |
