SOLVED: P2101 CEL

I have been experiencing the P2101 CEL on my supercharged Camaro recently. It occurs when at WOT and just at about 6k rpms. The engine loses power and actually shuts down. Pull to the side of the road, turn the engine off and wait a minute or so and it will restart and drive as normal. Dash shows the CEL and later confirms it's the P2101 which refers to an issue with the throttle body. One expert thought the throttle body motor wasn't strong enough to open the plate wide enough to allow enough air into the supercharger. If you reset the code it doesn't re light until you drive it hard at 6k rpm.

I happened to have a Vmax throttle body for the car and installed it with no change. I called Katech tech support hoping they had some wisdom on the issue and they can't suggest a fix. I just now have tried to contact Pete Incaudo of Vmax to see if he might have some thoughts on a fix.

Camaro6 has tons of experience with every issue possible on our cars. Just wondering if anyone might have some words of wisdom.

Put the stock throttle body back on and see if it still happens...if not, then.....etc.

Thanks for your feedback on my p2101 CEL. I read the specifics of the causes and potential fixes and none seem to apply to my case and especially what's going on when the code activates, IE full throttle high RPM (maximum air flow through the TB). A GM engine designer/engineer told me it's most likely that the throttle body motor is unable to open as intended because of the high pressure or volume of air pushing through the TB. He states it's probably caused by the ECM's failure to recognize the air pressure because of the Supercharger.

I'm going to call Edelbrock and see if they have experienced this issue with other Camaros...I can't be the only one who is having the problem since mine is a typical install.

Thanks, man...I appreciate it.

Good idea to check with edelbrock or a tuner.
This is a mismatch error. The throttle body is commanded to open to a certain position. The actual position reported by the sensor has to be within a certain range that agrees with the commanded position. If the two don't agree, you get p2101.
It is possible the airflow or vibration is moving the throttle plate causing a mismatch. It may be possible to reprogram the tolerance range for the two parameters to agree.

Mass Airflow Sensor issue? If using a NA MAS on a SC car it's likely not playing nice with the ECU.

So you didn't update the tune after the TB install? Also, are you running a spacer between the TB and inlet?

I tried both the ported and stock throttle body and the swap made no difference.

I'm using a custom setup for the MAS and not the Edelbrock solution. I will tell you about it later in this post.

Your first paragraph is right on with the solution. See below.

I had the stock throttle body on to start with which complies with Edelbrock's demand that the car be completely stock to use the kit and obtain the warranty.

PROBLEM SOLUTION: Graham Behan (Google him) who designed the LT5 ZR1 engines of the mid nineties and worked for Lingenfelter for many years as their chief engineer, and was a Chevy consultant on the LS3 development program. He now lives and works in my neck of the woods. He helped install the SC and altered the tune after I installed the LT4 injectors and high performance fuel pump. Yes, I know that voided my Edelbrock warranty. I've known Graham for some time.

Anyway, when all else failed, I called him a while back and told him the issue. He had been pondering the possible fixes and developed another edit to my Edelbrock tune for the car. So, I took it to him yesterday and he hooked up HP tuners to my Camaro's data port installed the new tune boom!...fixed. ctriz's post above was right on.

Because I'm not savvy on the tuning stuff, I can only tell you that he edited the tune where an event occurs at 6,000 rpms designed to shut the engine down if the parameters of the ECU and throttle body aren't in sync.

The final result is that my Camaro is now a beast!

Graham is still working and is internationally known as the LT5 guru. He rebuilds and modifies LT5 engines and is a consult for many of the LT5/LS3/LT1 performance shops in the US. If you think you need his advice, PM me and I can ask if he minds giving a phone number out.

Any chance anyone has the actual solution for this? My car just started doing this around 6200 RPM.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
