Even though they spec with a higher mu, I'd like some more initial bite on the BCDs. But, in all fairness, after driving my Gen5 the past few years with ST43s, that has given me a poor baseline for initial bite comparison, lol. I'm not discounting the variable of the OE fluid feel. I have some Endless to swap in. They feel good bringing the car down from high speed though.

Here's a representation (I ran the edges of the pads and traced the backing plates on paper to get these) of the HP1000 pad (in green) and backing plate :

And here is the BCD pad (in orange):

And both together. The backing plates are very similar except for the area towards the rotor hat and the upper corners/ears :

Note that as the BCD wears, the pad material area grows to more closely match the backing plate (visible in post #11) whereas the HP1000 starts and wears the same material shape. As I mentioned, the BCD had a little bit more radial depth.

And one more thing I noticed, much to my dismay. One reason I desired a Gen6, after driving many versions of them, was the steering feel. My '22 BCD SS 1LE does not feel as if the steering is as engaging to what I have experienced in the past. The BCDs are alot more heavier than the typical 370mm SS 1LE front brakes. I wonder if this additional unsprung/rotating mass has dampened the steering feel. Don't get me wrong it still feels good but there is something missing, even with slight steering inputs. It's more of a feedback feeling that it is missing.

And I did a recent A/B comparison, my buddy came in last week from WV so we could align his '18 SS 1LE. All he has is ST43 pads and Michelin 4S tires. Also, mine is an A10 where his is the M6. More weight disadvantage on mine. Now, a few years ago I drove his car with the OE F1s and then with the 4S' and I felt the 4S' did not have as good of a turn in as the F1s. And they felt softer. That being said, now, his '18 steering felt more alive compared to mine.

Both of our cars were aligned to about -1.2 all around and the total toe was very similar.

Outstanding info on the BCD. Really appreciate you posting here.

I am transitioning from a 2017 SS 1LE to a 2023 ZLE with BCD. After your comments, it'll be interesting if I can feel a difference in steering response that isn't related to the DSSV's.

I will be running the same wheel/tire setup on both at Sebring (305/325 Apex SM-10). I'm pretty familiar with how the 1LE should feel. I'll be sure to be hyper aware.

I've been using the DSUNO pad on track for a few years now and I love it. Hope the BCD pad is up to the task.

You're welcome. Nice upgrade to the ZLE!

How are the DSUNOs on the street? I will run the BCD Brembo pad at least the first track day.

Hi all,

Great info posted in this thread. Thanks for the input. I thought my 2015 Z/28 had the best brakes l had ever felt/used on a street car. The feel and overall stopping power was very impressive. I didn’t track that car so alleged shorter life of the CF rotors didn’t concern me. I felt those rotors would have lasted for a long time with the type driving l did in that car.

I felt my ‘18 ZLE’s steel rotors came very close to the Z/28’s CF brakes, and were not lacking, again, for the type of driving l did in the ZLE. It would have been nice to see the CF rotors on the ZLE, but I’m sure the cost vs. performance difference made GM choose the steel rotor route.

My new ‘22 ZLE M6 is a Cali car, thus it came with the copper free brake system. It’s still new with less than 1200 miles, but I honestly don’t feel any difference between it and my ‘18 ZLE, as to stopping power and overall feel. It is a street only car for me, so I can’t comment on tracking performance. With near performance to the CF rotors, and the affordability of steel rotor replacement, I’m completely satisfied with these brakes.

I really believe that these cars are close to perfect for a performance street car. Their looks, handling, braking and overall performance are very impressive. I’m sure some folks here who are tracking and competing with these cars may have other opinions, but even if l won the lottery tomorrow I wouldn’t rush out and buy CF rotors for my car. I’m very happy with the copper free brakes, for how I’m driving. I also didn’t notice any difference in deposited pad residue on the wheels compared to my ‘18. So far…a win/win for me.

Take care,

JJ

You haven't got that thing to the track yet! When is the day?

I only have around 900 miles on my 2022 but so far I've not been impressed with the initial bite of the copper free pads.
My old 2003 Monte Carlo SS SLP has a 1 of Wilwood setup with 14 inch 6 piston rotors up front and 13 inch 4 piston out back running BP10 compound pads and I suppose I've gotten used to that initial bite and pedal feel.

Both cars weigh about the same and I know it's comparing apples and oranges but thus far I've been wanting that bite back. Not sure what the specs are on the ZL1 with Copper free pads but my Monte Carlo could stop from 60-0 in 125 feet and this was with Wilwood polymatrix pad (less aggressive street pad).
I read the manual and it states not to track or do aggressive braking before 1500 miles on the pads and rotors...???

I only run the DSUNOs to/from my event (less than 100 miles). If it’s longer, I’ll swap trackside. They have tremendous bite and handle high temps very well, imho. They feel more linear and less like an on/off switch. The DS 1.11 is a better full-race pad, but it does feel like an on/off to me.

Before real bedding (track session), the DSUNOs squeal at low speeds. Their durability is pretty good.

My thoughts on my steering and what I was feeling with the possibility of it being rotating/unsprung related may have been premature. I upped my cold tire pressures (from the recommended 32 psi) and the steering feels better.

Crazy...
I work for GM and ya got me thinking because I have a leftover pads & rotors from tracking my 2018 that I expect to fit on my 2022. So I checked the parts release for both (Michigan) vehicles. Both released with same rotors 84271643/23369743, same calipers 84229171/2 & 84022227/8, same knuckle, but different pads: 23399101 FNT / 89047744 RR (2016-2020) versus new 85115096 FNT / 85113996 RR (2021+) after 01Jan2021. BUT notes the calipers/pads/rotors for 2022 are not part of the RPO = J6H&BCD.

Could be wrong... BCD does not appear to be a customer choice, but an automatic if the vehicle is build for sale in California/Washington.

So I pulled a random ZLE VIN at a dealership in Cali. Same knuckle, new rotors 85137534/84519605, new pads 85158659/86780718, new calipers 85125508/9 & 85113991/2. WOW for 2 states!! Didn't dig too far, but appears only Rear Pads common to CT4, nothing to CT5 (though it gets silly with colors and decals).

This bulletin identifies the J6H&BCD RPO is ONLY for CA/WA vehicles. https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...86096-9999.pdf
