LT1 Vs Supra 3.0

Supra did better than expected..
LT1 needs stickier tires!

The Supra did as expected, honestly. We all know the BMW sourced 3.0's 382 hp rating is underrated by SAE standards -- German manufacturers rate their engines with harsher ambient conditions and the Supra is essentially a BMW with Toyota bodywork and badge -- it also only weighs about 3,300 lbs. Also, C&D and Motortrend both tested the '21 Supra and trapped ~116-117 mph, and IIRC so did Jason Cammisa in another test. The '20s were a few mph slower.

Yes, BMW always seems to underrate its engines. I had a BMW 135i with a Dinan stage II tune for a number of years and that thing was super quick. Surprised a lot of other cars with it.

To make it a better comparison, a couple mods and the LT-1 would destroy the Supra... The Supra 3.0 is easily $15-20K higher than the Camaro.

Supra has about the same wheel hp as the Camaro but is also lighter, so not surprising really.

Supra also has 10 fake vents so it trounces the Camaro in that regard also.

The the LT1 they are using is on all-season tires whereas the Supra is on summer tires. A better comparison would have been an SS trim with summer tires or a 1LE Camaro.

The right tires and the nannies off would made it closer, but as others have pointed out, the Supra has the power to weight advantage.

the supras are faster. they are also much easier to pull power out of vs an LT1 camaro.

dear gm: thanks for releasing a "high performance" power train 6 years ago and not updating any part of it. your dedication is unmatched.

I am very curious how the manual Supra is going to perform. We need to see a m6 camaro vs m6 supra comparison. I was considering the Supra but didn’t have a manual back then. Still needs some handling upgrades and wider tires to keep up with ss 1le on a road coarse though.

i'm thinking about a manual trans supra. id like to drive one. it will inevitably be slower than the auto cars, maybe it'll be on par with a camaro when stock.

6 Years ago? The LT1 engine came out in 2014... 8 Years ago LOL.
To be fair the A10 trans came out in 2019 (or 2020?) so that was a meaningful powertrain update.

the camaros released in 16?

it was in the vette in 14 but they got the zr1 and now c8.

edit: i think the jury is still out on the 10 speed being any better than the 8. id guess the fastest stock trans cars are still 8 speeds. on the local, the 10 speeds don't seem to be any faster.

All the 10spd did was get GM out of any further legal issues over the A8. It's the same locally here for me as well with the 10spds being no faster than the 8spd when both are tuned. Ford/the Coyote in particular were the only one to reap any real performance benefits of the 10spd.
