SS backfire and miss at high RPM
I have a SS A8 and it backfires and misses at full throttle between 4500 and 6000 RPM's. Anybody know what it could be. Been doing it on 3 different tanks of fuel.

That's not much to go on. It sounds like a trip to the dealer to let them run diagnostics on the engine.

How many miles are on your plugs, and is it tuned or have bolt ons? Back fire under load could be a number of things, but the easy and most likely would be a cracked spark plug.

I checked this when I first bought my car (with 13 miles on it) and the harness on mine was routed incorrectly, which causes it to sit to closely to the AC belt. I routed it correctly as shown in the thread and there's plenty of clearance now. Mine did not show any evidence of rubbing, but was too close to the belt for comfort.

Thanks for the replies. My car is strictly stock with no mods. I have only 5900 miles on it and it has done this off and on since new. I only use Shell or Mobil 93 octane. Now it does it all the time and the backfires are so bad I am afraid something will happen with the engine. I have an appointment with the dealer so we shall see. I did check on that harness and I did not see anything near the belts. I had the A8 shutter now this. Both within 4000 miles.

The link to the other thread is about damage to the camshaft sensor wires. If it has really been misfiring there should be pending codes you can read. After so many events in so many starts it will throw a CEL. But before that there will be a pending code. |

I have an OBDII code reader. Not getting any CELs but will check for codes.
No mods to engine. All stock. |

If you have not been in there messing around a spark plug being broke is not super likely, but still possible. The dealership may have caused it, or just a bad plug up front. The fact that it started small and is getting more consistent could elude to a crack growing.

Back in the day High RPM miss was usually Ignition related. Fuel, It fell on its face

I agree, but his doesn't fall on it's face. Just an occasional miss/backfire, thats why I'm leaning toward spark. If it fell on it's face under high load and was backfiring or missing that would point out fuel as the best start.

I do not trust the dealership and the dill weeds they hire there. After working for one for five years then moving onto a Cat dealer.. I'm not sure how peoples cars even last on the road haha.
