Here are mine on a ZL1 1LE (excuse the dirty wheels!) Those discs are so big it’s ridiculous. Love them

CT5-V BW non CC Brakes are 398 mm vs 390 mm, not a big difference. Hopefully these copper-free pads are as cheap as the standard ZL1 pads and you can get great race pads like Ferodo DS 1.11 or 3.12 for track in that size.

For CT5-V they also get a non-copper CC option, as a CT5 buyer I would pass on that for track use due to super high cost of CC rotor replacements

Here's the front OE ZL1 Ferodo HP1000 pad (171-1192/23399101)compared to the OE BCD Copper Free Brembo BRM0023 pad (85158659). The backing plates are similar but not the same. The material shape is quite different. But the BCD material shape transitions to a shape similar to the Ferodo shape when the pads are almost worn out. The Ferodo HP 1000 still fits in the new BCD caliper but there is a small area near the hat that will not be used compared to the BCD pad.

The friction code on the Ferodo HP 1000 is "FF" and the BCD Brembo is "GG".

On Rockauto, the copper free front pads ($281) are more expensive than the Ferodo HP1000 ($235).

Converting a ZL1 1LE from Copper to non-copper brakes:

Does anyone know if just the pads and rotors need be changed?
Or are also new calipers or adapters necessary to house the slightly bigger rotor?

Thanks!

Why change from copper to copper free?

But to answer your question, Yes, At the front, the pads, calipers and rotors are all different between the typical Ferodo HP1000 copper pad brake package and the new Brembo BRM0023 copper free pad brake package (also know as the BCD package). At the rear, it is only the pad that is different (as far as I know on the rear).

On an SS 1LE or ZL1/ZLE, the front BCD pads, calipers and rotors are bigger than the typical Ferodo HP1000 copper packages on said models. At the rear, only the SS 1LE gets a bigger rotor and different caliper compared to its typical HP1000 rear package.

The new BCD package is the same when used on either the SS 1LE or the ZL1/ZLE. This makes the SS 1LE see a massive increase in its brake package. On the ZL1/ZLE, the BCD is not as large of an increase.

Zapp, as we spoke previously. Unless u have an out of state dealer willing to support u on parts, like I had. I wouldn't do this. Also converting will be very expensive and just not worth it in my opinion. If anything, get ur non copper free parts out of state, either pick up or delivered.

I don't believe I've ever seen an answer if the spacers and or bracket needs to be changed but I would certainly think yes.

Just buy the stuff from Rockauto or Amazon, or any other "non-dealer" supplier, right? If you have the typical copper pad, the Ferodo HP1000, you should be able to get the replacements. As I read the nhtsa paper from the above link, only WA and CA dealers cannot order copper pads. So have you tried to order from RockAuto?
With converting, you also have to deal with ABS calibrations that are different.

I believe I looked up the parts cross, the knuckle is the same between all models, so the calipers will bolt up and as long as the appropriate rotor and pad is used then there is no fitment problems.

Thanks guys.
I did some research and it confirms that on ZL1 (incl. 1LE) cars rotors, pads AND calipers are all different with the copper vs. non-copper brakes. So a conversion is off the table for me.

I could buy a copper brake equipped 1LE from out of state and according to a GM bulletin, I should be able to register it here, even though it's a "non-compliant" car. It'll only become an issue as soon as you want to service the car in CA. Not a big issue for me..

https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...86096-9999.pdf

Btw: Which brake system does actually offer better performance?
I guess the copper one is a bit lighter and a better fit for 18inch rims. Does the non-copper one offer better and more stable performance though?

I'd love to read if someone has data between the systems. GM had to size up to keep up with the cooling of the copper pads, that said, I believe the BW use the copper free setups. Don't quote me on this though.

2018 zl1 with brembo pads vs. 2022 zl1 1le with copper brembos is the same on the track. Both out brake 90% of the cars out there. The copper brakes work great

Yikes - so being that I am in CA and got a Brembo upgraded copper-brake 3LT RS built in Dec 2020, there's a $2000+ brake job ahead if I go with OEM components, per the NHTSA flyer, or I can just switch to Powerstop Z26 pads to avoid swapping out to the copper-free setup?

You can always buy a set of OEM brake pads or other brake pads for your vehicle online then give them to the dealer to install if you're not able to change them yourself.

That article basically says the dealers cannot order those brake pads. Which is stupid, in my opinion.
