Dropping oil pan without removing engine

Does anyone have any suggestions other then removing motor to take the oil pan off. I dropped the lifter tray bolt down into engine. And really do not wanna rremove the engine. Is it possible to somehow lower the oil pan so.i wont need to remove it. Thanks

Should be enough room to drop the pan an run some kind of extendable magnet down in there or if you’re really daring you can cut the cross brace out an flange for pan removals like on a 5th Gen

Its not an easy job and we've done it to check bearing. Seems like we had to raise the motor just a little and you still have to take a bunch shit off to get it done, just no wiggle room.

I once forgot to take out lifters during a cam swap and dropped 5 of them into the block of my LS1 like an idiot. Most of them found the oil pan but I couldn't find the last one for a few hours. I had to back spin the crankshaft a few degrees and eventually found it on top of the windage tray. Only dropped the oil pan an inch or two and used a bending extended magnet thing to find them all.

I’ve been researching this to do cam swap and the consensus is loosen motor mounts to raise engine as much as possible and lower cradle some too. There are some on here that have done it maybe they will chime in. There seem to be no real shortcuts and one must choose the lesser of two evils here. Some think it’s easier to pull engine.
I’d like to see an aftermarket company develop a special gasket or maybe oil pan to reduce the clearance necessary to get it back on like that.

Thats a good way to do it.

Will be trying it this weekend. I will fit motor up and drop the cradle a little and hopefully I can get to the bolt. Pray i can. Because taking the motor will make me spend more money tbh haha

i have not tried this but i have removed engine/trans. I would try unbolting motor mounts. drop the cradle about 2 inches. you WILL have to unbolt the trans too. This is because you are gonna hit the the body with the bell housing before you have enough room. so unbolting the trans should let you slide it forward enough to allow you to lift engine high enough.

also i seen someone say they wanna do it this way doing a cam swap. I dont know if thats a wise idea, it would be hard trying to clean up and do a good seal on the timing cover and be rough lining up your oil pump with how little room there is to work.

We never dropped the cradle, hopefully your doing this on a lift cause it would really be a pain in the ass on the ground. Good luck

Motor pulled. It was easier to do rather then dropping oil pan. But pulling trans from
Motor was very difficult. Overall it was done. Now time to spend more money for drop in pistons and rods.
