Quad tip install on borla s type is not happening :(

So I went to two different exhaust shops and they both are saying that my aftermarket quad tips won’t work on the single tip S type system because it’s to close to the back near the diffuser. They said there’s only like 3-4” spacing between the muffler and the diffuser. so guess I’m kinda undecided which way to go. I thought a fabrication shop would have been able to do some adjusting or cutting and re fitting of things to make it work but I guess not. Really don’t want to buy a whole new quad tip axle back... darn it

Just an idea, since I have the factory NPP and not Borla, but how about an aftermarket quad tip diffuser? You could go more aggressive with one that has a wider opening to accommodate 4" or larger tips. Most likely cheaper than replacing your S-Type with the quad tip version, and you'd also soup up the backend a bit.

Yea I installed the ikon diffuser for quad tips which is why I’m trying to get the quad tips installed. The opening left to right is no problem. It’s the depth front to back that’s causing the problem.

I feel that if the connector pipes in the rear were cut shorter on both sides and the system was shifted back a few inches it would work but the shops didn’t want to hear anything. I know it’s some customizing especially with the hanger arms having to be rewelded if it’s shifted back. Doesn’t seem impossible but I’m not the one that has to do it so lol!

You may be able get a place that builds race cars to make the mods you want. They are more likely to be able to do custom jobs. Most muffler shops are not really fabrication shops like race shops are. There should be a few around Detroit. Good luck!

Yea there is one other shop that does all custom exhaust stuff, mostly old muscle cars and trucks but by the website pictures they seem to get pretty creative. Worth a shot.

Just out of curiosity, any reason you didn’t oped for the quad tip S-Type?

I’ll ask a couple people I know that work around that Detroit area that are up to the task for you. It seems a bit weird that these shops are turning you away like that...

Yea thanks much! I got the single tip s type when I first got the car from a buddy for half price so it’s been on the car since right after I bought it. I installed the quad diffuser Friday so now I’m at this spot with figuring out the quad tips. I love the S type sound the best but don’t want to by another whole exact same system with quad tips. 950.00 bucks and that’s with discount... that would be awesome if you know of a shop or person willing to do some customizing. thanks again

The shop I’m gonna call tomorrow is lakeside customs in Mt Clemens. Their supposed to be really big into custom. Or at least I hope lol!

2 questions I guess. Where does the single tip fit in the opening currently? And secondly are those borla quad tips that you bought? My thought would be if they can cut the quad tips apart and just add the one tip with the bend in it to the existing pipe. Or cut the tips off and bend a pipe to replicate the way the quad tips are currently constructed with the stock single tip. If that makes sense.

Having done an S-Type on my old car, it would be tough. The position of the pipe centered on the cut out in the facia would not be easy with the tip you have. It would cause the outside tip to be into the facia.

You would need to cut the outlet pipe, make it shorter necessitating moving the hanger. At least that’s what I see in my mind, & I’ve done a lot of exhaust work, so take it for what it’s worth.

This is what I’m working with. I measured the depth from the hangar arm to the end of the tip. It’s just over 7 inches.

It seems like the muffler would need to be moved inward to the middle some for sure which I would assume would just be changing the angle of the hangar arm. As far as the depth that’s where the big issue is. It’s hard to find any quad tips that have an overall front to back length less than 8 inches. Their all like 9 inch or more. Hoping a good shop can just make their own custom stuff up if my stuff is not right for the job.
