They did mine without removing the motor.

Since you have to disassemble the front of the engine to do both, one would think it would not add more than 20 or 30min of time.

If you drop the pan, this^ is correct. Some guys have managed to snake the timing chain off without dropping the pan and removing the pump.

thanks for the replies. Reason i asked is the shop that might be doing the cam was telling me its a lot of extra work and in turn a lot more money.

It is, because the lifters are on top of the cam, it doesn't just slide out with the oil pump out of the way. The chain is also behind the bump. In addition, you have the fuel pump on top that is riding on the cam.

In my post i am referring to the fact they want to charge me extra to remove the oil pump when they change my cam. I want the oil pump replaced with latest part number while they are in there.

Ah, I see. Yeah I misunderstood.

If they are changing the chain, it’s no additional labor because the pump has to come off. If they are not replacing the chain, then I would be concerned.

Another failed oil pump

FYI....

Wife's 2018 ZLI 1LE M6, 6300 miles. Impeccably maintained. Oil pressure went to zero after running normal RPM for 10 minutes then to idle. Shut down immediately. Oil level full.

Car build date 10/17. Off to dealer tomorrow PM.

With the holiday weekend just got the phone call...Oil pump, no engine damage, waiting on parts.

I know nothing about engines so I'm assuming they can check parts of the engine without it running to verify no damage? I saw the turn engine off notice and literally rolled a few hundred feet into my friends driveway and turned it off. Maybe if the pump exploded and pieces went into the engine it would be a different story.

I kind of feel the same way about my 8/17 built ZL1. The rate of failure is higher than it should be, but still pretty low, and it's covered under warranty, so probably not rational to stress about it too much, especially if the car stays local. My concern is on trips when I'm hours away home--waiting for a tow and having to find a rental car can be a real pain! I've thought about purchasing the latest version of the oil pump and changing it myself (or paying someone to do it), but I'm concerned this might give the dealer an excuse to void the engine warranty if something else were to happen or the pump fails again.

I have set up a time to get the pump replaced by a local shop. I don't want to worry about it any longer and being modded, I'm sure GM will blame it on the mods if it does go and not warranty it.

GM should extend the engine warranty with the repair to give owners peace of mind after a repair like that. I can't recall the exact details, but I believe BMW extended the 4yr/50k mile warranty on my 02 M3 to 6yr/100k miles when they replaced the rod bearings (service campaign) after only driving 2k miles. That made me feel better about the car.
