Ordered an LT2 intake but having second thoughts…

I’m fearing my stock IM has a vacuum leak. I haven’t confirmed this yet but I’m heavily suspicious of it. Rough idle and misfire on Cyl 3 when cold starting. I did an Italian tuneup with Seafoam and it helped alittle bit but it’s still happening. I decided to just nuke the problem. Bought new plugs, new wires and I also bought an LT2 intake. I wasn’t 100% sure what my full goals were for the car when I purchased but I think I am going to go for a heads/cam build. But I am reading that will require the MSD Airforce Intake… which costs a good bit more… I could buy it but I’d rather hold off on that until I’m ready to do the full build… should I cancle my LT2 intake or should I install it anyway?

If you’re doing h/c I would cancel the lt2

the LT2 is still a great budget piece. i think the msd is almost a thousand dollars more. id guess there isn't a big difference in power output unless you plan on using a billet cyl head and healthy camshaft. stock ported heads have a considerably lower ceiling na vs a fed or cid.

Agree...The LT2 with heads/ cam is fine if you are not going with a cam that requires 7200rpm shift points. If you spec the combo to operate in the rpm window of the induction side it will run great.

This was always common back in the LS1 days. Everybody wanted to throw the biggest cam they could fit in the engine and spend no money on heads and intake. Then a mild cam car with a ported fast and a good set of heads dog walks that monster cam car.

Key piece of advice...the power is made in the heads. The cam dictates the power curve and rpm range. a Large cam in a stock heads/intake setup won't run to it's potential because the cam will want more RPM then the heads and intake can flow.

Me personally, If I am staying NA, then I am going with the best intake manifold that will fit under the hood, and quality set of heads. Then I would probably stick with a cam that is in the 226/236 range in duration for a weekend street toy.

Yea you can go larger and cut a hole in your hood for a hi-ram, but those setups start to push the envelope for what I would consider good street manners.

Have you check the stock intake manifold bolts? Maybe try re-torquing them?

LT2 manifold is a good upgrade regardless.

I am running a Mamo ported TB/LT2 IM on my 23x/24x cam setup and I can tell it would benefit from more airflow up top. In the logs around 6000 RPM my ported LT2 drops from 100kpa Manifold Pressure to the 95kpa range. An MSD+103tb would move that drop further down in the RPM range and give me more power to the 7200rpm redline. With the LT2 I shift around 6800-7000rpm.

i saw a members car with the gm hot cam and LT2 pulled well to 7600 or so. i do believe it has a katech ported cyl head on it, tho.

id expect a cammed car to pull well past 7k unless it was a very small camshaft. i shift my bolt on car at 6750-6800, 6900 limiter. the small cams i've been looking at pull clean to around 7500 where they terminated the pull in the middle of the peak power curve.

edit: i've been looking at small cams (btr 220) bc i'm afraid of bigger ones needing more rpm. idk how long this short block would last seeing 8k rpm every time the car goes out.
