Front pads sticking to rotor after wet and sitting
Has anyone else had this problem. First car to have it.
First time, I washed the car, parked it in the garage and came back from a trip 2 weeks later. I had to accelerate pretty hard and drag the front tires about 20 ft before they broke loose. Then a few weeks later, car parked after the rain. 2 days later... pads stuck and needed a little gas to break them off the rotor (nowhere near as bad as the first time) Are my pads too close to the rotors?

Yes and there is a bulletin on this....
Some customers may comment that when they go out and try to move their vehicle after it has been parked for a period of time, that they may have heard a "crunch" type noise right before the vehicle starts to move. Depending on how long the vehicle has been parked, the weather conditions in which the vehicle was parked in, and how recently the vehicle has been washed, the customer's concerns may range from simply a noise when the vehicle first moves, all the way up to the extreme instance where a vehicle cannot be moved out of the parking space. Important: Do Not replace any components for this concern under warranty. This is the dealer's storage responsibility to move the vehicles when weather permits. This will help with the brake pads rusting to the rotors. Please review the latest version of Service Bulletin 09-00-89-002 for additional new vehicle storage recommendations. This condition may be caused by the brake pads frozen to the vehicle's rotors. High performance brake components have a tendency to lightly bind, often noted as resistance, then lightly clunk when attempting to move the vehicle forward or rearward after a cold soak. This is usually noticed after parking, when the brakes have been wet, as in driving in the rain or just after a car wash. This is expected for high performance brakes with high friction pads and does not affect the operation or performance of the brakes. If a residual roughness is felt when braking, it can easily be cleaned by applying the brakes several times until the roughness is gone. If washing the vehicle prior to long term storage, it is recommended that the vehicle be driven and brakes applied several times before putting the vehicle in storage. Note: Parking the vehicle on a slippery surface like ice should be avoided when binding conditions are possible to eliminate the risk of the vehicle being difficult to move at a later time. |

Normal. All the performance cars I've had do this.

Agreed.. We see this on Porsche’s a lot. If I’m going to wash either of my cars, I always make sure I drive them to dry the brakes before parking them.

Normal. My car does this after I wash it, then park it in the garage. When I finish washing, its a short 20 foot roll back into my garage so the brakes don't heat up after I finish washing it. This is when I get the binding / clunk in the morning.

After washing, too prevent this, I have to drive up and down my driveway a few times before putting it away. Had to do the same with my 2013 ZL1, 2010 SS, 2006 GTO

Mine makes one heck of a pop, sounds as it breaks free from the rust. You would swear that something broke.

First time my wife heard it, she thought something broke too. She was standing in the garage when the brakes popped free and held her hand up at me saying "what did you hit?"

Yup. Happens with many performance cars. Porsche did this also. Easy to avoid. After I wash the car, I drive down the street and brake a few times... not hard but enough to get rid of the moisture. When I come in from the rain, I drag the brake for a number of feet before I park. If I can't do either, I move the car within 12 hours. No issues.

I didn't even know this was a common issue...not a daily driver to get caught in the rain & I also always hated how the brakes turn rusty while you wash it before your eyes.
Always did as morespeed with a quick spin after cleaning to buff the brakes clean. |
