2017 1LE Valvetrain Failure 31,748 Miles

I noticed a light knocking tied directly to Engine RPM that was most easily heard above 3,500 RPM. This noise developed ~3 weeks after my last track day. I took it to the dealership with a catch can installed and the recommended track oil in the crankcase. I would have returned it completely to stock had I thought it was an internal engine issue. The dealership replaced the camshaft and lifter rod due to failure of the #8 cam lobe for the exhaust valve. They referenced TSB #15-06-01-002F which I believe is related to high rev operation of manual vehicles. The only way the engine could have been over revved would be mechanically on a downshift because of the electronic rev limiter on the upshifts. The repairs were completed under warranty without an issue. There was a post-it note on their copy that said "extra parts" probably in reference to the catch can. The service advisor is aware the car is used on the track.

My car has to be one of the higher mile 2017 1LE's out there. I'm wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem?

Very interesting. LS motors are known to have exhaust valve issues.

I had an 09' Z06 with the LS7 that was lemon lawed @ 11K miles because of bent exhaust valves and premature valve guides wear.

I sure hope that doesn't become an issue on this motor and that this was an isolated incident.

Looks like a common issue on a lot of models

Had a lifter collapse only, no cam damage, at 1700 miles right after my first track day, 30,000 less miles than yours. Fixed under warranty. I have done two track days since, no reoccurrence. Only have 3900 miles total on the car.

The AFM lifters are a known weak point and one of the first things upgraded when an engine is opened.

Now cam lobe failure, that's usually from lifter roller failure or the lifter spinning in the bore.

It does make sense it's a part or design issue with the valvetrain verses over revving. There are only 3 to 4 track days on the car since I bought it. I asked if they could look back at the computer to see when the issue happened and they either couldn't or didn't want to make the effort. The car didn't ever throw a code....

The "extra parts" is the tech installed parts that may not have been part of that repair. Otherwise he may have seen something that also might of needed to be replaced.

In response to your last question I'm about to hit 36k miles on mine and have 5 track days on the car so far. No noticeable knock, all I hear (I think/hope) is the usual LT1 sounds. This post makes me nervous LOL. The urge to throw on some bolt-ons is real but I also like my warranty. Glad you got yours fixed and hope it continues to run well.

I was thinking that too... I've always had a catch can installed on every car, but am not doing it on the ZL1 1LE just for this reason.

If the valves look bad after 50k I will do a heads/cam/pulley/headers upgrade then and start over without worrying about the warranty!

I hope I have a dealer as good as yours if I ever have a problem. I don't have a lot of confidence in the dealership I bought my car through.

Lifters on my '14 Corvette Z51 were replaced at 34k, after noise coming out from my engine (is the same engine as the Camaro SS). I don't track my car and it's automatic. No over revs.

Don't think a dealer would deny warranty work because of a catch can. Plus they would have to prove it was the cause of the problem.
