Rear wheel well liner wear... track induced?

Hey guys, figured this question would be good for the lowered crowd.

TLDR: do you think this wear is from a few runs down the corkscrew or maybe an ongoing issue?

Took my wheels off and noticed the left rear fender/wheel well liner had a wear spot about a centimeter or so and a wiring harness is poking through and slightly worn too. I am stock wheels/height/everything SS1LE. I was at a few tracks with the car (Sonoma, thunderhill and Laguna Seca) and there is a high load area at the bottom of the corkscrew that is top of my ofFENDER list (dad joke).

I don’t remember ever hearing any scraping or anything but here’s a couple photos of the damage and one of the car under load.

I won’t be going back to Laguna for a long time but I’m not sure how to know if this is an ongoing issue or not and I don’t want to destroy that harness (which doesn’t have much room to be re-routed).

I searched and didn’t find any similar posts.

Thanks for any input!

Sledgehammer70 had the same issue. You need to reroute the wiring harness or install wheel spacers. See here.

That's an uncommon wear spot on an otherwise stock 1LE, usually only a factor if some one goes with a 305/35 or larger tire. Easy reroute of the harness though.

It's interesting: a friend and I both bought brand new 2020 SS 1LEs this spring, and we both autocross them. He had wear through the liner and I haven't, and the only difference I know of is that he attended one track day with his and I haven't yet. This is all on the original-equipment wheels and tires. Hmmm.

Now by the photo those track conditions you car does appear to be low enough that I went back and read the OP a few times about being stock probably a track induced situational rub given the conditions you're getting.

I'd just relocate the harness and call it a day, all it takes is about 5 minutes and maybe an extra zip tie (https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=485975).

The harness should of never been routed that way from the factory...another GM blooper.

I’m the friend. I did 2 autoX events and a track event without issue. At the next autoX I got a check engine light, ran the code and found fault for 5V reference signal from transmission. CEL cleared on the way home. Dealership couldn’t find any issue and sent me home. Next autoX got CEL again. CEL cleared itself again. This time for fuel pressure sensor fault. Then CEL came on during commute! This time it didn’t clear itself. Dealership found 3 different codes with the fuel pressure sensor fault still active. So they started troubleshooting...

They found left rear inner liner with hole and worn through wiring harness. They said harness had not been secured properly at factory. The clamp barb had not been inserted in hole, allowing harness to push against liner, which pushed against tire.

I’m not sure I believe the harness could create this much force to push the liner against the tire, but it might be worth looking to see if it has been properly secured before doing a track event.

Great response everyone. Sorry I didn’t catch sledgehammer’s post about it. Guess I’ll go the zip tie reroute route ... weird situation but seems like i caught it before any real damage was done.

Thanks again!

One thing occurred to me as I was replying in a different thread: with the semi-trailing arm architecture of the rear suspension, pushing the lateral lower control arm outward to get more negative camber would also move the knuckle forward a bit. So this rubbing is more likely to happen to cars that have maximized rear negative camber. Not that this should be an issue on a car with stock tire sizes. But if you also have a harness that's not properly clamped to its bracket (a la post #8) and it wedges in there so as to push the liner out a bit, and you have maxed out your negative camber, things could get a little too close.

Found holes in three out of four inner fender liners
Someone out there should offer aftermarket plastic liners

Good point. I do have the track alignment, with rear set to -1.7° camber.
