Horrifying noise from car after being turned off

It sounded like it came from the rear.... here is what happened:

Open driver car door > Turn car off > open second car door and start getting groceries

While getting the groceries both doors were open. Out of nowhere I heard what sounded like drilling into a plank of wood for about 1.5 seconds. I literally had no idea what to register the sound as at first and was confused. A few seconds after that my then still connected phone(iphone) via USB vibrated as if it was being charged.

I've heard the normal clicks, buzzes, etc when the car is off and seen them posted about. I have NEVER seen anyone post about this nor have I heard it before.

Anyone have any ideas? I am panicking. My dealer appt is near the end of the month

It's never made that noise before, also I didn't engage it unless it's auto.

Regardless, NEVER heard this.

My car also makes the "drilling" sound every once in a while when I turn it off. It concerned me the first time I heard it but my car is still running just fine. It's been at least 4 months since I first heard it. I'm also curious as to what the sound is coming from.

I was just as worried as you but my worries went away as the days and weeks went on with no issues. Hopefully someone else will chime in and can tell us what exactly is causing the sound. I also thought I was the only one. That tells us that most likely it's normal.

Isn't that the sound the unicorns make when they start poking holes in your exhaust?

Set your parking brake with the door open and listen for it. It might be the same sound but would definitely be odd if it did it by itself randomly.

Did just that and the same sound was made. Thank you for actually helping! I probably would accidentally press it when I would get out and that would explain why it would randomly make the sound.

Is your drive on an angle? Just wondering, i have notices when reading about the EPB that on slopes, the EPB will grab, but not sure if only manuals or specific models.

From the car manual:
Quote:
The vehicle may automatically apply the EPB in some situations when the vehicle is not moving. This is normal, and is done to periodically check the correct operation of the EPB system.

Thanks for the info! This would make sense. Always wondered what the sound was ever since I heard it the very first time.
