1LE vs ZL1 Suspension and Driveline Differences

It appears the rear diff assembly with the eLSD may be the same, but what about other suspension and driveline components; whats the same and what is different?

Tuning is much different sway bars may be thicker than the 1LE I do not remember

But most components probably the same but tuning for the horsepower & 2-300lbs gain is a must

Outside of engine, transmission, front brakes, spring and sway tuning, I believe they are identical. It's already been written that the 1LE is the better handling of the two. Likely because of its lack of additional weight from the supercharger and its extra coolers. Read Motor Trend's review of the ZL1.

What I am trying to understand, what are the actual differences, and how much of that weight can be attributed the LT4. Its relevant for those that might be contemplating a supercharger upgrade and do not want to destroy track balance on a road course.

Half shafts, transmission, bigger front rotors, more coolers.

I thought all of those would be the same except for extra cooling for SC. So how much bigger are the front rotors on a ZL1 vs 1LE and how is the M6 different?

The clutch is much heavier taking the abuse of hanging on to 750 crank horsepower modified applications.

I'd attribute most of the weight gain to fluids cooling most likely.

Motor trends article & review of the two last week was outstanding. Very good read

Yes, I know about the clutch, but the transmissions are the same. I suspect a lot of the extra weight is coming from the extra cooling, but would like to know how much, and to that end, what are the differences in the front suspension components to account for that extra weight.

Edit: Just discovered the front rotors are larger on ZL1.

SS has a TR6060 MM6, ZL1 has a TR6060 MJK

1LE has 370 mm front rotors from the Z06, ZL1 gets its own 390 mm rotors (probably to be shared with ZR1)

The 1LE gets the ATS-V brakes.

I forgot about that. The ZL1 has CTS-V brakes front and rear. Might be a nice upgrade for 1LE.

Thanks for that info. Might be a good upgrade, as you can never have too much brake, but they will add back a few extra lbs of rotating mass.

I've got the stock SS 1LE brakes broken in and have laid a good transfer layer on the rotors then went for my second blast through the mountains. That being said, GOD BLESS anyone who uses these brakes to their full potential and then feels the need to upgrade. Stock fluid and pads feel amazing I'm sure a pad and fluid upgrade would only make these even better. Keep in mind a lot more than just overall diameter goes into engineering a good balanced brake setup. Remember the ZL1 is more nose heavy so it's brake bias front to rear is probably not optimized for the 1LE.

IMO nothing on this car should be modified until you have been on track and are consistently exceeding its limits. 95% of us will never need more than what this car is off the showroom floor.

GM says the performance sway bar kit is the same as the ZL1/1LE.

ZL1, as mentioned, gets bigger front AND rear brakes

The ZL1 is only 200 lbs heavier, due to blower and associated parts. The rest of the coolers are the same as the SS and 1LE.

Due to the extra weight I would guess the springs and MRC tuning are different.

It would make sense that the radiator or secondary radiators are larger.

ZL1 USES stakes to direct air away from the front tires rather than air dams.

I would be surprised if the half shafts are different since they use the same, larger E diff., based on GM' practice of parts amalgamation.
