6L50 fluid level check without temp gauge

I have a LFX and 6L50 in my 66 Chevelle. I don’t have a trans temp gauge in the car. I also don’t have a body control module so trans temp won’t show up on my ScanGauge ll.
So I’ve been using an infrared gun on the bottom of the pan to gauge the temp when I check the level. Is this close enough?
Anyone have any idea as to how fluid temp relates to the exterior of a tin oil pan?

Temp gun is good enough, all they really mean is minimum operating temp.
