I have an AWE axel back that had the chrome tips and bought the Black Diamond tips to replace them. Problem solved

I don't get it. I've always just used water and a rag and there have been a couple times where they weren't cleaned for months on end.

You got them clean but they will be shinier if you polish. After you polish, they will be slick and dirt won't stick as easily.

Use Dawn (or generic) dish detergent. It removes carbon and get them shiny like new.

I use the Meguiars wheel cleaner that I use on my wheels. It removes brake dust and exhaust residue very well. Spray on, wipe down, rinse off. Clean as a whistle.
