I wouldnt. Just stick to the 5w30
I actually run Rotella T6 which is 5w40 I believe. Higher additives for diesel engines. I dont have cats though. Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk

Why would you want to use anything other then what has been recommended unless your engine is heavily modified?! Using a thinner or thicker oil is a sure way to introduce an unnecessary increase of risk of a catastrophic failure. Several years back, sold my 1987 Callaway Corvette to an individual who decided to use 10-30 instead of the recommended 5-50; within days of doing so, he spun a few bearings and destroyed the engine.

Its a little heavier than the 5-30. Using Pennzoil Plat I use about a 1/2 qt in 5000 miles. Using the dealer 5-30 gm synthetic it didn't use any oil but getting the GM oil is a big PITA.

Are you using synthetic Pennzoil with Dexos? I use fully synthetic Mobile1 with Dexos with no issues; the amount of oil used/burned between changes isn't enough to register on dip stick.

I’m running the Euro spec 0-40 on the recommendation of my tuner/engine builder. Very very reputable guy in the northeast. No issues

be carefull…..there is more than one 0w-40 Mobil1 There is the common Mobil1 European Formula 0w-40 and then there is the Mobil 1™ ESP 0W-40, which is what is recommended for the 2019 up Corvettes.
The European Formula is NOT Dexos certified, where as the ESP is.

need to void your warranty quick change oil grades..... you have a engine specifically made for the grade of oil recommended, I use driven racing oil ls30 full synthetic specifically made for a modified LS engine with 5 w 30...…. I do not pay over ten bucks a quart because...…. SO go ahead play with this or that oil because some dude tuner says why not just because he can use it in a turbo..... maybe you can post some day about your engine going south and someone can learn is how I feel any more...…..
People used to hammer on me for recommending Driven racing oil and doing a break in with BR30 and using ls30, then some bright fellows read up and figured out if its recommended by all the major parts makers it might just be the ticket...…… or they got it included with their engines they bought aftermarket or read on varied sites of the best vendors...…. There are guys who just run the regular dexo blend and do regular oil changes also everywhere and do fine also... I play it safe because its a hell of a investment for a new engine.

Same here stick with the owners manual. Heavier oil is just going to make the engine work harder and reduce gas mileage and hp.

For an oil recommendation, I'd post your mods. Bearing material, bearing clearance, lifters, cam, valves springs... climate, intended use.... all kinds of stuff play a role. All stock, just open the owner's manual.
For example... Newer cars with under .001" aluminum bearings, all stock... put in whatever the owner's manual says. Break it in exactly as the owner's many says. Take that same engine in a crate race version with .002"+ clearance tri-metal bearings... would use a little thicker viscosity and the break in would be a couple warm up laps then hammer down. So... what's your mods, weather, intended use? btw, just an opinion, diesel oil is for diesel engines. They are loaded with detergents to carry the diesel soot to the filter. And in a diesel engine, they don't care about detonation because they run on detonation. So, they are loaded with calcium. A gas performance engine is just the opposite... load up the anti wear zinc/phos, reduce detergents, avoid calcium or anything else that can create detonation. |
