Track day & insurance

Heading to first track day and class in two weeks.

Checking, what are folks doing for coverage?

My car is paid off, but heard weird things about policy cancellation as it is viewed as competitive event.

Thx

I used to use Lockton...switched to RLI when I got the 1LE.

RLI is the underwriter for Lockton. It's about 20-30% cheaper per event.

I know I will get panned for this, but I can count on 2 fingers the amount of crashed cars I have seen instructing these classes for 10 years. Now me on the other hand, I run in full race-like conditions with full track open passing, 12 inches from the car in front of me (if there is one), push the car 100% and I have NEVER purchased insurance. It's obviously a risk, but in your case a highly mitigated one, since you will not be anywhere near the limits at any time. my $.02

PDX/HPDE is a different beast than club racing.

Most PDX guys have very limited time on track.

I have been to 10 events in the last two seasons and have personally seen 5 crashed cars. In fact, my dash cam was subpoenaed earlier this year by the insurance company of one of the wrecks. They refused to cover his totaled C6Z.

To me the two biggest dangers are.....a car in front of you suddenly drops fluid (you have NO control over this situation) or you have an off on wet grass (this you can control by being VERY conservative on track when you know an off will put you on wet grass). I have seen both of these on track days in all 3 classes of drivers. They all ended badly. It never ceases to amaze me how far a car will go on wet grass!! I have never seen any contact between cars yet.

Couple hundred bucks vs possible total loss is a no brainer.

How mad would you be if you hit a puddle of coolant and spun into a wall, totalling your car? That's what you have to answer. Just like any insurance, it's a complete waste of money until you need it.

I overheard a guy on his cell phone at a track event talking to his friend who had just wrecked his car and he suggested driving it home and then claiming that he hit a deer. This is always an option if you want to risk jail time and enormous finds ... read: don't commit insurance fraud. Talk about not worth it!!!

You need to weigh the risks and benefits of insurance and decide if you want to trickle the money out or risk a big lump-sum for repairs.

The guy above who has been instructing for 10 years and only seen 2 crashes is super lucky. I've seen a 458, m235i, two corvette c6 z06s, fox body mustang, 5th Gen Z/28 all eat a wall... I have also seen a full race vette throw a spark plug and catch on fire. I've only done like 30 track days so....

RLI is the way to go! I won't ever track without insurance. However I don't insure when I autocross because I have yet to run a course where I felt I could possibly do damage to my car aside from a cone scuff mark. I don't think that applies to every autocross though. Know your venue and know your limits. If your going to be right on the ragged edge near some light posts or a fence maybe you should insure.

I've see 2 times that in one session at Road America. So, for some of us, the odds aren't in our favor. In one day, I saw about 4 times that number.

Of those, at least 3 cars were a 100% loss.

Wow just got a "quick quote" for a Track Night in America, only $216 for $45,000 agreed value. But man that 10% deductible.... that would really hurt the wallet haha
