First Track Day Prep

I plan on going to the track on 5/21 with my car and after going through the stickys and what not, just wanted to see if theres anything else i shooud do. Car should be at around 1200-1400 miles by then.

500 Mile Oil Change: Done already at the dealer, should i get another one before the track day?

Diff fluid change: worth doing before or wait till after

High temp brake fluid/brake bedding: deff doing this, miami is already too hot

extra brake cooling ducts install: do they make enough of a difference?

I recently did mine... I think you should be fine on the oil change if they used the 15w50. If not, I would upgrade to that. Otherwise just brake fluid and you should be good to go.

You guys change oil alot.
My BMW M3 I had did not require oil change till 15,000 miles. I took it in at around 10k miles and they would not do it till computer said it was due.

I owned 3 M3's before my move to the ZL1/1LE. BMW's recommended intervals were BS. It was their way of saving money.

i would flip the front suspension hats to the track alignment and get a track alignment done.

I did not use the 15w50 weight oil because i was not on the sticky SC3R tires. If you are on the stickier tires, I would switch to the heavier weight oil since this is what is recommended/warrantied.

i would get the rear end fluid done. I waited till my car was around 8k miles before my first track day to do it, and it was gnarly in there.

for brake fluid i would go with castrol srf, or one of the high end fluids people recommend on here because some of the cheaper dot 4 stuff will still have issues or require more frequent flushes.

i am not sure what you would do for brake cooling ducts. i didnt do that personally.

The brake fluid is the most important. I would do the diff as well, mine looked like hammered shit when I first did it. Now I do everything seasonally. Track it all year, then do engine oil, tranny, diff, and brake flush around Nov/Dec.

Actually BMW does this because they offer the maintenance program where they change all fluids at the recommended intervals. I still believe the M cars still require the oil to be done every 5k but maybe they updated it.

I owned a 2012 135i before getting my 2018 ZL1 so I know the reason why they say 15k miles.... its because in the maintenance program BMW does it on their dime. It use to be every 7.5k or 10k but they bumped it up.

Go look at the inside of a BMW engine after it has 50k on it while doing the 15k mile oil changes. It's nasty as hell.

This is all well documented on BMW forums about how they bumped up the oil changes so they don't lose as much money.

Like it was mentioned, you NEED to change the factory brake fluid. It comes with DOT 3 from the factory and you need DOT 4 for the track.

I would leave the factory alignment in place and get a feel for the car before you start messing with the suspension.

Read the high performance manual supplement. It will answer your questions. Also, the Camaro owner's manual says the rear diff. fluid must be changed before use on a track, after the 1,500 mile break in.

Read this:
See page 185: Camaro Owner's Manual

If this is your first track day, are you having to do any "1st track day newbie class" thing?

If so, then id just check on all your fluids and call it good. When I did my 1st track day as a newbie, the 1st 2 sessions we didn't get over 60 mph. The 3rd and 4th session we were able to be without an instructor and go ham. Tbh, while you will go over 60mph, you won't be going balls to the wall and won't be killing that factor brake fluid. So for your first track day, I dont really see a point to do alot of stuff to the car. BUT, if you were to do ANYTHING, id recommend changing out the brake fluid to a quality high temp fluid (not GM stuff). This way, after your first track day, you will be able to tell if its something you want to go regularly or not.

Past that, if you DO want to just go all out on ur track day, then id do brake fluid, oil change, diff fluid change and a track alignment. also, quality tires. Leave the ps4s and "daily driver" tires at home. if u have sc3 tires, id recommend your tire pressure to be between 28-30 warm.

Definitely read the high performance manual supplement - I printed out a copy and kept it with my trackday stuff. Two simple reminders - remember to remove the rain deflector under the hood and remember that the seatbelts have the ratchet lock that keep you in the seat pretty well.

The event that I went to, they gave me a form to fill out that had to be signed by a certified mechanic which had all the items that needed to be checked. Does the event coordinator have a list for you to have checked?

Also, if this is your first event, I'd make sure you have plenty of water depending on how long the event is. My event was for about 6 hours, and near the halfway mark I could tell that I didn't hydrate enough.

You will want to run track weight oil 15w50 (most likely you have 0w40 in it now)
Diff fluid change: worth doing before or wait till after
Wait until you have some more miles on it. Follow the performance guidelines.

High temp brake fluid/brake bedding: deff doing this, miami is already too hot
Yes, swap out the fluid for something more robust. I use: Castrol SRF Racing Brake Fluid
extra brake cooling ducts install: do they make enough of a difference?
Are you talking about the SS air dams? If so, ya go for it.
Enjoy

Read this:
See page 185: Camaro Owner's Manual
The manual states on page 186:

Rear Axle Fluid
Axles must have 2 400 km (1,500 mi) before
being used in track driving.
The rear axle fluid temperatures may be
higher than when driving in severe
conditions. Drain and refill with new fluid
after the first racing or competitive driving
event, and then after every 24 hours of
racing or competitive driving. See
Recommended Fluids and Lubricants 0 313

Chevy recommends changing it AFTER your first track event, then every 24 hours of track use thereafter. I doubt if would hurt to change it before, but they recommend to change it immediately after the first track use. I'm guessing there is a reason for this.
