I consider my 1LE to be both a sports car and a muscle car. That's what makes it so unique. It's a larger coupe like a muscle car, but it handles like a sports car. Although I have previously owned a C6 Corvette most of my previous cars have been smaller sports cars (350Z, 370Z and BMW 135i) all with suspension modifications. All those cars really handled, but, with the exception of the BMW, lacked the overall power of a muscle car.

The overall size of my 1LE has taken me some time to adjust too, especially the length and width, but it stops and turns and handles almost as good as my highly modified 350Z, but has much more power. And my 350Z is alot of fun on an autocross course.

I've only driven one other 6 Gen Camaro, a regular 2SS manual, so I can't really say how other 6 Gen models drive, but GM's alpha platform is a very good chassis. In my opinion I don't think there is a better sports car on the market for the price than an SS 1LE. It's half the price of a C8 with Z51 with 95% of the performance. And you still get the muscle car sound and looks to go along with it.

Me? It’s neither although CHEVROLET will be happy if you consider it one, the other, or even better both.

It’s got too many seats to be a sports car and it handles wayyyyyyyy too good to be a muscle car. Muscle cars are a one dimensional car. Closest to a muscle car today is Dodge Challenger but even that handles and stops pretty good.

But watch this…….the classical definitions will actually offend people and they’ll jump all over this.

Camaro is a “sporty coupe”. In its 4 and 6 cylinder versions no one would consider those muscle cars, but they are sporty.

Without an SS minimum or 1LE they are the best on the track, but they still handle and brake reasonably well making them, yes, sporty.

Sports cars - 2 seaters 2 doors to start.

Muscle cars - base car isn’t much until you put.a nice V8 under the hood. Giving it “muscle”. Base Camaro still handles and brakes. But does that make an LT1 a muscle car? For some, yes but not IMO.

Now the big question is, do you need a V8 or is it simply a HP number? So is a high HP twin turbo V6 a muscle car? E.g. CT4 V Blackwing?

It is both a sports car, and ALWAYS has been since 1967.

It's had a 6 cylinder available since day 1 (and a 4 cylinder in the 80's), The Camaro 302 was on the SCCA from 1967, as well as the 396 on the street and strip.

It was advertised as the "hugger":

As well as everything else:

It all depends on how YOU define it.

I think this is the best way to describe it for the SS. The ZL1 I personally would call a super car.

Way too big and too many seats to be a sports car.

Definitely a sports car and a muscle car depending on the trim.

But do you consider the Camaro to still be a Muscle Car?

For me personally, having never actually driven one, I think the 6th generation Camaro kind of straddles the line. It's still got the big displacement, low RPM, naturally aspirated or supercharged V8 (I know it also comes available with a turbo 4 and V6 options, but most people associate classic muscle cars with V8s); however it also has been praised for it's chassis dynamics and handling and, especially when equipped right, such as with the 1LE packages, can hang with just about any "true" sports car on the market.

And for me, this agility and handling is the main reason why I want the car, and why I would now consider the Camaro a sports car. While I would like to experience a V8 at some point in my life (after never having owned one up until now), that's really secondary to a great handling, well sorted car.

So what do you guys think? Do you feel that the 6th gen Camaros are now truly sports cars, or do you still look at them as classic muscle cars? Would love to hear your thoughts on the matter.

Its a sports Coupe.

Wow, I didn't expect to see so many varied opinions. A lot of great points made for however you choose to define it.

Now how many other cars do you think have this same broad spectrum of appeal?

It's crossed over to sports car territory. Great handling, great braking, decent lower trim power (335 hp V6), good NA V8 power (SS), or great power (LT4 in the ZL1). The old definition of a sports car (2 seats and 2 doors) isn't accurate anymore in my opinion. The 5th gen Camaro is more of a blur between very capable muscle car and sports car.

I could see a base Camaro 1LT just being a "sporty coupe", but higher trims are definitely sports cars now IMO.

It's GT car.

GT stands for*grand tourer*or*gran tourer, a type of car that’s designed with both long-distance driving and high speeds in mind. These vehicles typically combine luxury and performance attributes, more often than not featuring a 2+2 seating configuration
