At an energy conference in Texas today there was a guy who said…
  • Industry needs clear policies to guide long-term investment decisions to support decarbonization and development of alternative fuels and propulsion..
  • He said that the Inflation Reduction Act is a good example of the type of regulation that is needed to make the energy transition as smooth as possible.
  • He said that it is “the type of regulation that will accelerate breakthrough technology to unlock battery storage, bring down the cost of carbon capture, and develop and commercialize hydrogen”

So this guy is clearly bought in on the idea of needing to control climate change.

Now, the punchline…

He’s the Managing Director of Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. and the United Arab Emirates Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology. Speaking at an oil conference.

Although it sounds impressive, ADNOC is a relatively small company with zero influence.

The CEO of BP, a decidedly large company, regularly spouts off about green energy this and green energy that but it's all for show because he knows darn well the foreseeable future of his company is tied to oil and gas production.

True, ADNOC is a minor player, but this guy is also a major minister in the UAE government.

About 3 miles from my house BP is building a new gas station / convenience store right off of a major interstate. The first thing that went in was four EV charge points. BP and Shell are both buttering both sides of the bread.

This guy has a clear understanding that it's in his (and his company's) best interest to parrot the correct talking points which will keep the dollars flowing and the protests at bay. He also understands they'll need to adapt or die given the direction of the industry and the outside influence impacting future initiatives. His statements don't surprise me at all.

Smart move. Again, adapt or die. "Gas" stations make all their money on chips and drinks. Having to wait 30 minutes for a full charge will benefit them as drivers come in and spend more money. Make the convenience store a nice place to kill time.

I agree. Just because CEO's see which way the wind is blowing and parrot the approved party line doesn't mean they endorse or believe in the underlying malarky.

But what if he’s a government official of an oil producing country? (He is and it is). I have a feeling they have no motivation or incentive to buy into a US government “party line”. So maybe they are actually saying what they actually believe.

This only happened because of the bullying activist pressures applied to the ruler. Without parroting the ad-nauseum talking points of the woke-brat climate extortion movement including John Kerry, he would have to endure their non-stop brow-beating. Now he has bought some time to keep the woke elite mob at bay.

He has conveniently given them a propaganda win by the appearance of some half-baked statements that Kerry and others will milk for all it's worth.

Hardly a cathartic change of heart, more of a reluctant p.r. move by the Minister to avoid bad publicity for a few years. The context of his statement reveals a lot.

So the UAE cowtows to John Kerry, who holds no position of power in any government anywhere?

If Kerry has that kinda juice, maybe he should be President. Don’t worry…joking.

In January Glenn Youngkin turned down the idea of a Ford / CATL battery plant being built in Virginia amidst concern that the plant would be run by a Chinese company.

In February Gretchen Whitmer announced that Ford and CATL will build a battery plant in Marshall, Michigan. The plant will employ 2,500 people and will be built, staffed, and operated by Ford. CATL is licensing Ford the technology to manufacture the batteries. So, no Chinese control and 2,500 well paying jobs added to the tax rolls.

Correct. He’s a messenger. He makes no laws. He enforces no laws. He negotiates no treaties or agreements. He relays messages to and from the President.

I agree he has a lot of influence. I don’t think he has any power. His “power” is indirectly through the power of whomever he can influence to use their power. There’s no leverage there.
