Question Cracked Windshield

I recall a thread here discussing problems w/ after market windshields & can't find it. I have a cracked windshield & in need of having it replaced. A rock from a dump truck hit near the base, made a chip, & now has a growing crack . Should I take it to the stealership or is a local glass co. OK? I have an '11 SS/RS M6 w/ HUD.

I just had mine replaced from a local glass company here in town. Just use a reputable shop to do it. My glass doesn't say GM anymore, but it was made by the same company that makes them for GM. Glass is still clear and no distorted spots.

Well since it's an "m6" and a "ss" I'd take it to the dealership

I used "Safelite". It's a national franchise that uses 100% money back guarantee. I've used them for several of my cars. One time they didn't put in a seam to my liking and were very happy to remedy it.

I put M6 in there b/c I think there is a different windshield for cars w/ remote start, which is a feature only available on auto trans cars.

I think it's only for the ones that have HUD's, don't think the transmission has anything to do with the glass.

I had to get my windshield replaced after only 800 miles. I used a really good local glass shop. They ended up replacing it with one from Guardian, supposedly the same manufacturer that makes the GM version.

Do be careful though, there are different model windshields depending on whether you have an auto or not, remote start or not, hud or not. I have an A6 with remote with hud.

This. Doesnt have to have GM on it. You will never know the difference. I also have 2011 2SS M6 w/ HUD.

If I recall correctly, there were some issues w/ HUD focus or wavy-ness?

Personally, I wouldn't go with an independent. I'm sure others have had success, and maybe its better now...but when I replaced mine, I shopped around some. They didn't want the vin, no idea what HUD was, just got the "yeah, yeah, yeah, we got it line"...Anyway, ended up at the dealer, they used the VIN...correct windshields were not immediately available...so it put my mind at ease, that if the dealers had to wait for the correct ones, don't know how the "small" guys could have them...Anyway, good luck with however you go.

If you take it to the dealer they will just farm it out to a local shop. What's important is to make sure you get factory replacement glass. Any shop can get this. Just don't settle for anything else. Try Safelite down there in Beaumont. They should be able to handle it.

Yeah...the shop asked me questions about remote start or not when I was booking the appt...so it does matter.

Call your insurance company to see if it is a lower priced item. Most companies have a windshield clause. Then decide who your want to do it if it isn't going to break you out of pocket.
