It happens all the time, despite parking far away.
I was sitting in my car once, engine off, parked far away in the parking lot. I wasn't the farthest away possible, but far away enough to where the closest car near me was maybe 15 spaces up. Someone decided to park right next to me, not knowing I'm in the car (tints and somewhat dark out). The guy gets out and stares at my car with admiration before walking into the store. So I guess some people park close to admire. But most people probably do it just to annoy us. The only people that I don't mind them parking next to me is other car guys. I know they won't harm my car just like they know I won't harm theirs.

I always park with a barrier on one side, and try to never park next to a car that looks like kids sit in the back. And try to park so the passenger side of the next car is besides mine, if I cant find an spot with no-one next to it. So far so good!

At least he parked on your passenger side rather than blocking the drivers door, the one you would most likely use.

My current car isn't a "nice" car by any means, but I still care about it (only one ding in 6 years due to careful parking). I do think mostly it's people who think they're being funny or just jealous and trying to make you nervous. But I have purposely parked next to a nice car (not way far out but far enough I know they care) so that I act as a barrier for them on one side. I don't get close or anything, but they may wonder "why is this Mazda parked by me out here" lol. I'd want me parking next to me cuz I'm never gonna ding your car.

It's due to a rare genetic defect called the Sahara Desert syndrome. Even if you were to park all alone in the middle of the Sahara Desert, these poor folks feel helplessly compelled to park way too close to you!

my favorite retaliation that I've seen was at a local wal-mart.
some guy was parked with his truck across like 4 spots. now, mind you, he was out in the back away from everyone. someone zip-tied a buggy to his trailer hitch. his tail end away from the entrance, so unless he specifically went back to look, he'd have never seen it. I laughed. |

If I come across another Camaro, I may grab the spot next to em. But it goes in the boonies otherwise. Came out of Twin Peaks once after lunch and there's some SUV parked smack dab nearly on top of my car. I'd parked in an end spot and cinched it up tight to the curb and this lady pulled in crooked to the point that I couldn't even open my driver door. She's napping in the driver seat and I laid into her. She sits up and smiles and waves so I called her a few choice words along with "Why not try parking closer next you stupid f**k" until she moved so I could actually get IN my car. Sitting there looking at me like I'M the asshole too.
I can understand people intentionally messing with you. That's just people being people so long as you're not doing damage. (It was Mustang night at a local cruise and I rallied a bunch of Camaro's to roll in together. Got some head shakes and laughs). But being flat out blindly inconsiderate is something completely different.

That's one thing that changed in this pandemic. Since most people work from home and I'm one of the essential employees that have to be still at the office. The parking lot is almost empty. You can park anywhere with no one parking next to you.

Haha so crazy I literally created a forum on this a while back too. People absolutely do it on purpose, especially the lifted trucks. |

I normally would not have parked here but had to. I watched this old guy back into the spot from across the parking lot and was not happy. Took him several tries and this was his best effort. This was at a church. I cringed as he squeezed himself out of the drivers door. To make matters worst, he must have forgotten his bible or something but he came back out to his car and decided to use the drivers door again.
I sold that car with 50k miles on it without a single ding. I bought my 18ss with < 5k miles on it and it has several dings. Some people just don't care where they park. I don't mind the walk.
