No way would I go with a polycarbonate windshield (post #9) on a street car. That would end up being one big scratched up mess over time.

I dunno, Suzook. I've been learning a lot about windshield glass in the last 24 hours. Apparently the window adds stiffness and some other stuff I don't quite understand (I'm not that kind of engineer). Passenger airbag deploys off windshield (at least in the video below) and apparently the glass is part of the roll over structure.

Dunno. I'm completely ignoring all the FUD from the glass replacement web sites.

You racing guys weld up a roll over cage of your own, right?

Before this happened I would have said "naa.. I've been driving for 30 years, never had so much as a chip". I have my new car a month and I'm replacing the window.

/me googles clear plex.

That footage was made in 1999, which means the technology and engineering of those cars was from about 1995 and earlier.... I think I saw an old Olds Shilouette minivan in there.... Ewww.

Modern cars share nothing from a technological, engineering, and safety standpoint with those cars.

I know most people think a windshield is a windshield, but don't skimp on a windshield replacement. Yes, there is a safety factor involved, but they also play an important part in interior noise levels (some are double laminated). Low quality windshields can also have waves causing distortion. I would find out who the supplier is for the OEM windshield (probably PPG) and contact them for a replacement. Most insurance companies don't care and will only pay for the cheapest windshield.

I hadn't thought of collision centers. I'll definitely call around and see what's local. Makes sense the dealer would just sub it out to a glass specialist, but I've never had this happen before.

Ironically, I was not following too closely. I chose not to put xpel on the front, and have just been leaving a lot of space between me and any vehicles in front. I noticed a lot more "sandblast" effect if you leave the normal separation (1-2 car lengths). You can hear it, even.

I'm pretty sure a moron in a beat up 5th gen did it. Yup... one of our own, so to speak. Busy traffic, he was weaving in and out. Got in front of me, and then floored it. At highway speeds, I -heard- him do it, and then saw the rock come flying back. No way to avoid. Gave up all of its energy on impact then rested under the wiper until it slid off.

In addition to being concerned about what this will do to the structural integrity of the car and future issues with leaks and such, I'm trying to find a place that'll be careful of the paint when they do the replacement. Watching videos on youtube of windshields being swapped make me NOT want the guys that'll come to you to do it.
"I chose not to put xpel on the front" Are you reconsidering that now?

Naaa. But someone up thread suggested an xpel like thing for the glass and that sounds like a plan. There's even a place locally that shows up in the dealer / installer list for it. I went to the web site and if it can do what it says, I shouldn't have this problem again.

I'm going to have it looked at Monday morning. Be nice if they could just repair it, but it has two aspects that seem to universally indicate replacement: It's "longer than a dollar bill" and it goes all the way to one edge.

They may have to try to repair it and then eventually replace it. It'll be "interesting" to see how long it'll take to order a new windshield.

+This. Also, check reviews online of places around you?

Followup: Just left glass repair place. The difference between high quality after market glass and GM glass (we called the local GM dealer) is a whole $50, so I'm going with GM glass. ($525 vs $575). It's immediately available (scheduled for replacement Friday), and this is with the HUD.

My deductible is $500. Might not even file the claim. Dammit.
