New 2023 Camaro ZL1 Shifter Play!

Hi! I am new to this forum and decided to join to share some of my experiences and see what other people do to their cars. So I picked my brand new ZL1 manual in shadow grey yesterday and absolutely love it. However, shifter has a 1/4" to maybe 1/2" play sideways (either left or right). If you grab it with 2 fingers you can see it move. Is it normal? Have you guys experiences same? What was the solution? Any feedback is appreciated.

I haven't noticed any abnormal play. In fact, I find the 6th gen shifter to be quite stout. That's probably why there is little-to-no aftermarket short throw shifters available for the TR6060 (I think just Hurst?). A short throw shifter was near the top of the list for every T56 trans car I've owned, but I haven't found myself wanting for one on this car. A contributor to the tiny aftermarket short throw options is also likely related to difficulty of install on the TR6060.

It is normal for there to be a small amount of play with the trans in gear. The more I think about it, I'd say 1/4" to 1/2" of slop is an expected amount.

Welcome to the forum. Great color choice and state

Yes my 2017 ZL1’s shifter is the same. No issue in my thinking.

Loose the OEM shifter:

Yeah I have a 22 ZL1 M6 and the first thing I did was take it to the dealership and have the Hurst Short Throw installed. Well worth the money. I did the same thing to my 19 GS 2LT Corvette. Only here I did the install with the MGW Short Throw as it is easier to do since it is installed from the top. Made great improvements to both rides.

Wow! Dealership did this for you? Do you have an exact product that you've installed? I heard Hurst is a a good shifter. Is it possible to install from the top?

It’s a pain to install is the main reason I decided not to install one in my ZL1. I personally like the Hurst shifters as I had one in my 3rd gen, 4th gen and 5th gen Camaros.

Right! It seems like a lot of work just to change this shifter....agree! Not even sure if I would trust a dealer to do that.

Short throw shifter was a no brainer on T56 cars and a huge step up from the OE shifter. It was my first thought when I got into a 6th gen as well.

However, since the OE shifter in the 6th gen is leaps & bounds better than any previous GM shifter AND a shifter swap on the 6th gen TR6060 requires removing the tranny, it's not a common nor a worthwhile upgrade IMHO.

I had a Barton in my 5th gen, a UUC in my CTS-V and Pro 5.0 w/ Lou's short stick in my 4th gens. It was a super common mod on those cars and easy install.
