Second Oil Change - 1500 mi

I had the first (500 mile) oil change done at the dealership as the car was back in for some warranty work and they did it anyway. I am close to 1500 now and am considering doing the oil change myself.

My question: Would I be better off having the dealership doing the 1500 mi oil change so that it is on record with GM for warranty purposes? I don't really trust them with the lift and ensuring everything is done properly. Seems during the 500 mile change it was done ok, lift points look good underneath, oil level is good, just some sloppiness with filling the oil I needed to clean off the engine.

Appreciate the advise.

Complete waste of an oil change. I have bought several new performance cars since 2000. Not one has ever had an oil change before 5k miles. There is no need. They dont use special break-in oil anymore. Havent for years and years. Not only that, but the oil filter catches all the particles that the magnetic drain plug does not. This is a huge waste of your time and money. Not trying to be mean, but please you dont need to do another oil change.

I did a 500 mile and a 2,000 mile. My car has never been back to the dealership, even for TSB's. I'd rather just buy the parts and handle it myself.

I understand where you are coming from, just trying to be sure I follow the GM recommended break in procedure so in case of a warranty claim they cant say I didn't...

Same here, did one @ 500 and about to do one @ 1500. It is a 65k+ vehicle, if you are not willing to do a couple extra oil changes...….

Also going to do the rear end while I have it up in the air.

Did both my 500/1500 mile at the dealer along with the rear diff flush and brake fluid flush from dot3 to dot4 for track use at 1500. Only reason it was all done at the dealer was warranty so GM can't come back and say...we have no record of this being done. I will be doing it myself from now on.

My 2 cents on the I never change my oil in my performance car because it doesn't have break in oil....I believe this is short sighted. All new motors will have metal particles in the oil during the first couple thousand miles. I would rather remove the particles replace the filter to ensure that something doesn't happen to the motor. I can tell you my rear diff oil and motor oil in the car had a good amount of metal in it. The Oil filter also had some metal in it.

Seeing as no where does it state that the vehicle has to be serviced at a dealership, then you are safe to do what you want to.

I changed by oil the first 500 and 1500 miles plus the diff fluid too. I've only let the dealership change the oil once (because we get 2 free oil changes) since I brought it in for a TSB and change out the tires.

Again, do what you want but GM can't deny the warranty just because you didn't get the oil changed at a dealership. Use the correct fluids and you'll be ok.

Keep records of oil and filter purchase.
The warranty concern is not needed.

+1

Best if you buy your PF64 filter at the dealer. They actually are pretty comparable prices...the PF64 at the dealer is $4.30. Then Chevy knows you bought it. Take pictures of all of your receipts and products you bought. You can then store them all in one place.

" just some sloppiness with filling the oil I needed to clean off the engine"....

Of course there is! They cant and wont do anything right. Probably the oil drain plug and oil filter were over tightened too. Do it yourself. Just document and you will be fine.

Technically I agree except in the event there is engine issues, your gonna hear you didn’t change the oil per our schedule. Sorry!! And you can change your own oil, keep the records.

Agreed. An early oil change is cheap insurance.
