Break in
I've seen where some of you guys are changing the oil and diff. fluid at 500 miles. Is this just a preference? I don't see an early oil change in the manual

There is not a requirement for early oil change like the Corvette has. Some people just want to go the extra mile and make sure they are doing everything possible to ensure longevity of the motor. I changed mine after the 1500 mile break in period. You get two free oil changes or its easy to do yourself. I think you will find this to be a "touchy" subject with strong opinions on both sides. Enjoy the new car!

I would like to change it sooner in my opinion. I have changed my own oil my whole life. So I might have it done for warranty's sake. I have 879 miles on mine.

I did rear diff only at 900 miles. It was dark black and full of shiny bits.
Engine oil still looks fresh and saus 79% on the dash display so will probably wait for the one year mark. |

They'll provide a free oil change "early" if you want it...just have to push a bit. There's no limitation other than you get two...and they'll keep track of when you use them up.
I change my oil at 500 miles, and 1500, then after that: change for track days, follow the OLMS, or once a year (whichever comes first). My thought process is: I'd like to remove any metal/other particles that the filter captures during the initial break in so the next 1000 miles has a clean filter and oil to do it's thing...then, again at the end of the break-in period to remove any other stuff. I usually leave the diff fluid alone until 1500 miles. But I definitely change it, then...along with the transmission fluid. Though, I understand if people don't feel this is necessary. |

I think most people would be surprised at what they would see even after the first 100 miles if they were to drain the oil and put it under a good light. It may not look all that dirty at a glance but put a bright flash light on it and watch it sparkle with metal fragments that the filter does not catch. I am big on early oil changes. Factory recommended time frames are swayed toward customer convenience, not what's optimal for the engine.
