Oil Cooler Leak

Good Morning!

Last week while changing my oil in the 1LE, I found some burnt oil residue on the oil pan. Found some bolts on the oil pan that were loose and had oil residue. Brought the car into the dealership today and they are fixing it under warranty. They also informed me that the oil cooler is also leaking and they want to replace it ($900), but it is NOT covered under warranty which I found strange. I told them to proceed with the oil pan but I will take care of the cooler.

Has anyone dealt with a bad oil cooler before, or had one go bad? It doesn't look like its hard to change, 4 bolts, a couple lines and a gasket.

Thanks,
Jeff

Are you out of the 3 yr /36,000 Mile warrant? I don’t see why the oil cooler wouldn’t be covered unless they are saying it’s not part of the driveline warranty

Yeah, I've seen a few people on here have issues with the oil pan. That's odd that they're trying to say the oil cooler isn't part of powertrain when the oil pan is...might want to check with another dealer on that one.

I've not heard anything on the oil cooler so I'd wipe it down and make sure it's actually leaking before swapping (in case it's just stuff leaking from the oil pan that ran down and dealer thought it was oil cooler). But, if you do determine that it's actually leaking, you're right it's pretty straightforward. 4 bolts, 2 quick disconnects, and a gasket. Steps are:
  1. Drain oil
  2. Drain coolant
  3. Remove 4 oil cooler bolts
  4. Remove gasket and clean gasket surface
  5. New quick disconnect fittings must be used any time hose is disconnected. If not using a new oil cooler with these already installed, you'll need a pair of new connectors and seals. These are torqued to 34 Nm (25 lb-ft).
  6. Install oil cooler using a new gasket. Bolts are torqued to 10 Nm (89 in-lb).
  7. Connect hoses and fill oil/coolant

I would try just torquing the oil cooler bolts, before I went through tearing it apart. You might find them loose.

Good point. If it's leaking from where it mounts to the engine that's definitely what I'd check first before opening the system up.
