BMW 7 Series (And equivalents)

Hey all,

I've noticed the price of the 2016/2017 BMW 7 series (740i xdrive and 750i xdrive) ranging from 35K-40K with 30-50K miles. Most of these vehicles has previously 100-120K MSRP with pretty advanced technology.

I'm still considering camaro as my first option, but these used 2016/17 BMW 7 series had me wondering considering I commute 40 miles to work and love technology in cars.

Worth looking into?

Have you looked into the repair costs for when that lovely German technology eventually breaks?

Yeah grab one if you are experienced with working on those cars. If not I would pass on buying one.

Its a fairly known fact that BMW 7 series has one of the worst depreciation rates among automobiles. Luxury cars tend to have high depreciation; I believe Jaguar and the 7 series may have the worst depreciation in the industry.

I believe it. While the ones that buy these cars new are probably crying at the depreciation, there is something to be said about buying a new car. Its an entirely different experience as opposed to used. I'm not putting used cars down (I've bought quite a few used cars), but a new car day is special.

On the other hand, the very wealthy may not necessarily feel the pinch of excessive depreciation, so 50 to 60% depreciation may get ignored by the wealthy (except the money wise people).

This X's 100!!! Without a solid warranty, the price of repairs is astronomical. Many people consider these German cars, but do not take into account the cost of upkeep. We traded my wife's '16 X1 M this past March for a '19 Terrain Denali. We never had any problems with the BMW and being a new car, it had their factory warranty. With that being said, if you're buying one USED, make certain it has an ironclad warranty. It could end up costing you a boatload if not.

My uncle bought a 745 used few years ago.

He never liked Christmas.

He felt like it was Christmas everyday in this car because of all the warning lights in the dash.

Sold the car few weeks after.

I got a good chuckle out of this.

Well, I figured it was worth asking here (knowing full well this is a camaro forum of possibly biased opinions). However, your comments do align with other people's comments. I might still test drive one to see if it's something i'd like, but the dependability and reliability seem to keep me afraid of a purchase for now.

Of course you will have a hard time matching the luxury and comfort that's comes with the performance, but in my opinion, the fact that the car will cost a ton to fix will make you regret more your purchase than you will enjoy it.

And I am not biased here. I am not able to afford such luxury. If I wanted that much technology and comfort, I'd go with something else like a Lexus or Genesis (I like those).

Good luck!

This is probably an overwhelming reason that you can pick up a 2 yr. old 7 series or high end Merc for a song. I like them, but on the other hand I like cars that do their job without a lot of complaining. If I had to chase (costly) repairs with one of them then I'd avoid them like the plague as well. Give me a Tahoe or Sierra with the best interior offered and I'm good!

A lot of the time, people will pick up these used cars for a fraction of their MSRP in hopes that it makes them look "wealthy" in public. Little do they realize that when these cars break down, without a solid warranty, they cost an arm and a leg to fix. On top of that, many of the folks that buy them don't have the financial means to fix the BMW, Benz, etc.. The parts and labor are very expensive.

Use your head and buy a new vehicle, over a used "luxury car". When it breaks down and costs a fortune, you don't look "wealthy", you actually look quite foolish.

^Agreed. A Benz or Bimmer broke down on the side of the road actually looks very foolish.
